SW4 2014 – Saturday Review

SW4 always promises to deliver a huge lineup; and this year was no different. Clapham Common battens down the hatches once a year for an onslaught of thousands of festival-goers eager to experience some of europe’s finest EDM DJ’s and Producers in the flesh.

We arrived at Clapham Common to a slightly cooler day and walked around the site to get our bearings; there was four stages this year, The Gallery, The Last Day on Earth, the DJ Magazine Arena, and of course the Main Stage. The set times had been posted so we knew where we needed to be and when; and first up was Oliver Heldens on the main stage. Somewhat predictably the early crowd knew exactly what they wanted to hear – Gecko. He set the scene well for the early comers, and we got some great photos of the crowd enjoying a rave in the sunshine.

Next up on the main stage was Danny Avila, who has had a quick rise in EDM, and now normally plays with the big names in the US – but his UK festival appearance this year shows his universal appeal. His bootleg of Ellie Goulding’s Burn went down particularly well.

Leaving the main stage, we headed over to catch Loco Dice in the DJ Mag tent  – at our earlier interview with Tristan Ingram, he’d said how much he was looking forwards to Loco’s set, so we couldn’t miss it either and made sure we were right there to catch all the action. He didn’t disappoint and obviously really enjoyed his set; bouncing around the stage like it was midnight! It was still early, and the sun streamed through the tent’s openings – it got pretty hot in there, but the crowd stuck with him on his deep but funky journey.

This is where it all got a bit hectic; we rushed back to catch Fedde Le Grand, saw him play a few stormers including Off With Yer Head, but we had to rush off again for Booka Shade – who were playing live in the Last Day on Earth arena. The stage had been cleared of the DJ booth, and in its place was two ‘pods’, one containing percussion, and the other, synths. The crowd was in for a treat! The guys gave a really expressive and vibrant performance, interacting throughout on the mic. Off again to catch Super8/TAB in the Gallery briefly before we rushed back to catch Seth Troxler while it rained (timing!). Seth is a relative newbie by comparison to Sasha who followed him in the Last Day arena, but by no means less impressive, and he really delivered a storming set to amp the crowd up for Sasha.

The festival site isn’t too large, so all the running about wasn’t too difficult. The entire central area was made over to food trucks and rides which made a welcome distraction for some.  We made it back in time to catch New World Punx on the Main stage – Markus Schulz and Ferry Corsten are ever the showmen and put on a fantastic show, really hyping up the now growing crowd – the huge screens had some amazing visuals and NWP had the pleasure of playing as the sun started to dip in the sky – what a beautiful sight it was. Alesso followed NWP and played a lovely dj set, warming up nicely and building the vibe for W&W, but it was over to catch Aly & Fila for us in the Gallery arena where the crowd were really getting into it.

Knowing that Markus Schulz was up next we stuck around and were treated to a great set, punctuated with classics – always one to play to the crowd and we were not disappointed! The vibe was electric and you know when Ferry Corsten is hanging around back stage that something special is going on. I could have stayed front and centre there for the whole set, but Above & Beyond were up on the main stage, and we had to go capture!

By now the sun was well and truly down, and the lighting on stage picked up a notch- the Above & Beyond show had begun. Huge vocals, and reach-for-the-lasers tunes are what A&B are known for, and they certainly delivered right til the very end.

Thank you SW4 – a fantastic day with some amazing moments and something I’ll remember for a long while. The journey home with the sorest feet I’ve had in a long time, and I can’t wait to do it all again next year!

Highlights for me were Loco Dice, New World Punx (Markus!), Aly & Fila and of course Above & Beyond. Epic day

Introducing Malta’s Sunscape Festival

Details of the incredible debut from Sunscape Festival are today revealed. Taking place in the beautiful surroundings of the Mediterranean's most hidden island of Gozo-Malta, the festival promises an all-encompassing immersive experience for music and adventure lovers. From the 3rd-10th September, Sunscape will take over the bays and beaches of the island to welcome a wide variety of international DJs, live acts and artists spanning the creative landscape.
THE MUSIC
'The Headland', set on its own serene peninsula, will play host to takeovers and showcases from some of electronic music's leading labels. New York house and techno pioneers ReSolute home to Kiki and Tiefschwarz, will take on hosting duties alongside the colossal Get Physical MusicArupaPrime TimeWhy So Serious? and local talents Electro Swing Malta

As founders of 'Get Physical', releasing tracks from the likes of Carl Craig, Erol Alkan and Loco Dice, M.A.N.D.Y will demonstrate why they have become one of the biggest names in electronica. The classically trained 'Clockwork', who has seen releases on Hot Creations and Life and Death, and Avatism, whose recent debut album 'Adamant' continues to receive rave reviews, also join the line-up in a very special collaboration. Both  are formidable forces in their own right but together they will set the shores of Gozo alight. Formidable in their genre-defying mix of live instruments, South African electronic music duo Goldfish will perform live and not to be missed.

With a sound that takes inspiration from the synth pop of New Order and Depeche Mode to the energy of acid house and 90's techno, Berlin's Thomas Schumacker has become a name on everyone lips having spent over 20 years as a DJ and producer. Add these to a line-up that features household names such as Guti, the pioneer of 'emotional house music' and the genre-bending Sebo K, alongside electro duo and hugely popular Pig&Dan then you see why Sunscape acts as an epic round-up to summer.

LIFESTYLE & ART
While Sunscape will host an array of boat, beach and after parties amongst the magical surroundings of Gozo, the isle will be the playing field for a celebration of unique performanceartillusion andcinema, affirming that Sunscape is so much more than your regular festival. The village, in amongst the restaurants, bars and hotel rooftops, will act as the canvas for an immersive and experiential art installation that will be built especially for the event. Collaborative works from local talents and creative thinkers alike will span the paths and walkways of the village, while festival-goers can immerse themselves in the many recreations on offer, from archeryzip lining and kayaking to yogaPilatesand craft workshops.

HOLISTIC
With a location that could not be any more ambient and atmospheric, Sunscape presents the Holistic Arena. Under the dominance of the Xlendi watchtower, and perched on the very tip of the peninsula, senses will be tantalised by the abundance of therapies, workshops, exhibitions and tastes. Discover and experience new therapies, indulge in the spiritual rituals of yoga, Pilates, crystal healing, Reiki and meditation, or indulge in the sensation of a floatation tank, created in a natural rock pool, and heated by the natural suns rays. The festival promises to keep the heritage and beauty of the sites intact with its active Environmental Policy and “Leave No Trace” philosophy. Sustainable initiatives are in place throughout all aspects of the festival from planning stages to pack down, and will continue to expand through years to come.

ACCOMMODATION
The island of Gozo opens its arms wide for visitors with a range of budgets, and Sunscape offers everything from beachside camping to bay front apartments. Standard, self-pitching and boutique camping options are available, while the village offers a range of authentic Maltese apartments and hotels situated in the midst of the celebrations. For what will be the perfect close to the summer, Sunscape has saved the best festival until last.

Tickets are now available from day tickets from €39 to camping packages from €135 and apartment packages from €300. Sunscape offers one of the best value getaways of the entire festival season in arguably Europe's most hidden and breathtaking locations.

Loco Dice and more added to growing SW4 lineup

The 2014 edition of SW4 continues to grow with even more acts announced today.  The Summer Festival Guide can reveal who else joins the lineup today.

As one of the greatest DJs of modern times, Loco Dice joins us at SW4 this summer for his exclusive London festival play of 2014 and at the very pinnacle of his career. His upcoming ‘Used + Abused’ event at Brixton Academy sold out weeks in advance and with SW4 representing his final appearance in the Capital this year, his addition to the lineup will only add to the clamour for tickets. Dice is no stranger to Clapham Common of course. His back-to-back set with Carl Cox last August provided one of the key moments of our 10th Anniversary and in 2014 Dice will be pulling out all the stops to top thisphenomenal effort. This summer will also see Dice sharpen his skills at many of the world’s leading festivals including Sonar, Tomorrowland, Kazantip and Movement, before he closes the season in style with a hugely powerful performance at SW4. If there was ever a time to see one of the most excitingand in-demand DJs on the planet, this is it.

In 2014 Josh Wink’s seminal label Ovum Recordings reaches the two decade mark. A series of parties across the globe will celebrate this achievement, but when it comes to London Josh has chosen SW4 to commemorate this milestone. His set at the festival will include many of the standout tracks that have gone onto define his imprint over the past twenty years and build a reputation alongside dance music’s most illustrious. As for Josh SW4 2014 represents a very welcome return for one of the finest DJs we have been lucky enough to bring you. An incredible performance back in 2011 was amongst the best of the weekend and with 2014 holding even greater significance we expect something very special from this iconic figure.

The intricate, electronic soundscapes of Henry Saiz have been on our radar for some time now, mainly because of his forward thinking, beautifully layered DJ sets for The Gallery at Ministry of Sound. His deep, yet melodic bass combined with hypnotic riffs and surging breakdowns can transform any room, arena or stage into an intense cauldron of sound, with this the predicted outcome of his performance at South West Four. Having showcased his superb live show to a capacity crowd at Shoreditch’s Village Undeground last year, Henry brings it to SW4 for the first time on Saturday 23rd August. Anexploration into melodic-hypnotic house, analogue techno and retro-futuristic pop, Henry Saiz Live will immerse us into his interpretation of electronica and entice dance music aficionados to Clapham Common from all over.

Another key artist from the Desolat family joining us at SW4 2014 is Robert Dietz. Having cut his teeth on the Frankfurt scene alongside the likes of Sven Väth, Ricardo Villalobos and Luciano, Robert’s sound captures the celebratory spirit of old-fashioned club music, joining it with sleek, 21st century vibes. 2014 has seen Robert’s relentless touring schedule continue with appearances at Time Warp (Mannheim), Output (New York), Spybar (Chicago) and Robert Johnson (Frankfurt), plus upcoming gigs at many more of the world’s leading nightclubs and festivals. This will be Robert’s SW4 debut and as his productions continue to include the vital ingredients needed to make a dancefloor explode, we know he will go down a storm.

Disclosure, Rudimental and more set for Hideout 2014

Today Hideout announce a plethora of stellar artists on 2014's bill including the young and unstoppable duo, Disclosure, Black Butter’s runaway outfit Rudimental who will be returning to the show as is Hideout favourite, Loco Dice. Hideout also welcomes new artists to the show such as house music veteran Sasha and king of the groove, infamous for his exceeding popular Ibizan residencies, Solomun. New for this year are VIP tiered tickets, offering attendees access to exclusive events in the area, queue jump access onsite and merchandise. There is also new ‘Hideout experience’ including accommodation, airport transfers and more to take any pain away from the booking process, all available from the Hideout website.

Rudimental @Hideout Festival 2014

As Hideout enters its fourth year, the week long event created by Sound Channel has established itself as the forerunner of electronic music festivals. Last month they announced a new registration system for tickets, and today some of the huge number that signed up are in with a chance of gaining entry to the revered event that last year sold out in the record time of eight weeks. Dance music’s grandest talents and sharpest stars play both during the day at beachside pool parties and intimate boat sailings as well as through the night on the infamous Croatian Zrce beach strip.

Spanning over sixty artists, four venues (with major improvements for this year), extended boat and pool events and offering guaranteed sun exposure on a beachside-setting, Hideout is the obvious choice for dance music devotees in search of the ultimate festival experience.

CARL COX & FRIENDS ARENA FEATURING:
CARL COX & LOCO DICE B2B
[FIRST TIME EVER IN THE UK]
MARCO CAROLA · ADAM BEYER
GUTI [LIVE] · HECTOR
& VERY SPECIAL GUEST
CARL CRAIG

Having previously announced that one of our most loved DJs will return to South West Four this summer, we can now confirm that Carl Cox will host his own arena on Saturday 24th August. Carl will showcase only the biggest names in techno, as well as take to the decks with one of dance music’s most esteemed artists for the first time ever in the UK.

Carl Cox and Loco Dice back-to-back. A meeting of minds. A meeting of masters. Last summer these two virtuosos went head-to-head at the closing party of Carl’s world renowned residency at Space Ibiza. In 2013 South West Four is delighted to present the return bout, as these two techno titans lock horns for the first time ever in the UK. This is one for the history books.

Loco Dice

The past few years has seen Loco Dice’s stature rise immeasurably to become one of the most devastating and respected DJs on the planet. His Desolat imprint is home to some of the world’s most prolific electronic talent, whilst his sense for sounds and innate understanding of dancefloors is what distinguishes him from other DJs. Heavily influenced by his legendary performances on the Amnesia Ibiza terrace for Cocoon, Loco Dice remains a hugely popular figure, as evident again at his sold out residency at Electric Brixton across the recent Easter weekend. The next opportunity to catch this tremendously sought after DJ in London is at SW4, a chance that should not be spurned.

As figurehead of the Swedish techno scene and Drumcode Records label boss, Adam Beyer has turned heads worldwide with his sensational performances for many years. Since establishing Drumcode in 1996, the labels forward thinking, passionate and uncompromising laurels have stayed true. Undeterred by the demise of many other labels which started around the same time, Drumcode has always been one to push the envelope and is part of the reason why the label is still flourishing today. Adam’s Drumcode podcast attracts a healthy seven million listeners every week, whilst his last appearance at South West Four, where he headlined his own Drumcode arena in 2011, proved one of the highlights of the weekend. In 2013 the message is clear; Beyer is at his best, do not miss out.

Carl Craig; A visionary, an innovator and an ambassador for the Detroit techno scene. Since releasing his first track back in 1989, The Grammy nominated artist has chalked up a phenomenal career and continues to motivate music lovers of all ages with as much power and intensity. Since his early days he has gone on to release a plethora of his own material and remix well over one hundred tracks. Always forward thinking, the Planet E head honcho has managed to reinvent himself time and again and prove an inspiration to everyone along the way. Making his South West Four debut this year, we are delighted to welcome one of the greats, as Carl Craig joins us on Clapham Common this August Bank Holiday weekend.

Having being brought up in an exceptionally musical family, Guti was first a classically trained jazz musician, before playing to packed stadiums across South America in a rock band. It wasn’t until 2006 that he started to create techno, but of course with his jazz, rock and latin influences all playing an important part in the process. Since then he has gone on to release music on labels such as Wolf & Lamb, Saved, Carl Cox’s Intec and Loco Dice’s Desolat. This summer you can catch his outstanding talent at South West Four, where he will showcase his highly impressive live show.

Hector is one of the most exciting young DJs on the planet, effortlessly experimenting with the founding spirit of house. With a string of high profile releases to his name on labels such as Desolat, Tsuba and Saved, Hector has come a long distance since he started DJing in his native Mexico at the tender age of 16. A move to England soon beckoned, where he fell in love with London’s music scene and where he has remained ever since. The Mexican’s passion for music knows no boundaries. His DJ sets are full of energy, precision and soul, whilst his own productions are always on point; sophisticated and cultured. The future of house music is about to take flight at SW4, make sure you’re on board.

ANNOUNCED FOR SW4 SUNDAY

BEDROCK ARENA FEATURING:
ERIC PRYDZ · BOYS NOIZE [LIVE]
LAURENT GARNIER · JOHN DIGWEED
TIM GREEN [DEBUT LIVE SHOW]

There are not many other DJs as synonymous with South West Four as John Digweed. 2013 represents his ninth consecutive performance at the festival, more than any other artist. With one eye firmly on the future, John’s philosophy embodies South West Four, whilst his ingenuity, dedication and all round ability to destroy dancefloors is why we always welcome him back to Clapham Common with open arms. John’s performances at Bedrock have helped build the label’s reputation as one of the most acclaimed club nights in underground dance music, welcoming international talent of the highest calibre at each event. Having hosted Bedrock arenas at SW4 in 2007, 2010 and 2012, it makes perfect sense for John to bring Bedrock back for our 10th Anniversary as his thrilling legacy at SW4 continues with his label’s greatest artist showcase to date.

Eric Prydz

Frenchman Laurent Garnier is a name that goes hand in hand with dance music. One of Europe’s most celebrated electronic artists, Laurent has been making the planet dance for the last 25 years. Having delivered arguably the finest performance on Clapham Common in 2011, Laurent remains a huge favourite with everyone at South West Four HQ and we are honoured to welcome him back for the 10th Anniversary.
