Lost Village 2016 Festival Review – a magical paradise

Mix up a multitude of techno-hungry ravers, a plethora of incredible DJs and artists, a dash of gorgeous woodland surroundings and lashings of the most weird and wonderful experiences you’ll ever come across at a festival. What do you get? Lost Village, of course!

In only its second year, the dreamland of Moda Black’s Jaymo & Andy George took place deep in the Lincolnshire countryside, kicking off festival season in the most enchanting way possible. I’ve been to many a festival in my time, and nothing quite made me as excited as this. With the likes of Ben Klock, Fatboy Slim, Bicep and Eats Everything – to name just a few – it seemed we were in for a hell of a bank holiday weekend. And God, were we right.

As we arrive at Lost Village, we felt a sense of flair and passion for what we all love; a good old fashioned rave. Perfectly honed and crafted in such a magical way, we’re invited to this story book world, where our only worries are to grab a well-priced wine, have a dance and enjoy the experience. Friday’s line-up was bursting at the seams – we arrived early, seeing acts such as Huxley and PBR Streetgang intensely warming up the growing crowds at the smaller stages, whilst Doorly over at the main stage Burial Ground, blasting out tune after tune to a slow-burning crowd who grew bigger and bigger by the minute.

My heart fell to the ground when I realised Fatboy Slim and Ben Klock were on the same night – we all know that clashing panic. Luckily, Lost Village had timings to perfection – at half 9 we were able to see the iconic Fatboy Slim take to the decks – and yes, it was just as epic as you might imagine. You really do forget all the classics that he did – Right here, Right now was one of the most intense dances I have ever seen, with crowds literally bellowing out those four words at the top of their lungs, bursting into a dancing frenzy as it dropped. Crowd-pleaser Eat Sleep Rave Repeat literally saw everyone jump rhythmically in the air, creating a wave of raving fists in its path. It seemed everything – even Praise You, was a lot more electronic than we’d imagine, but everyone lapped it up either way. A brilliant vision and an amazing atmosphere, which left us enough time to run over to the master himself – Ben Klock.

Now, I’ve seen Ben Klock a fair few times, and he will never fail to amaze me. The fact Lost Village had this incredible act in such an enchanting setting was one of the most surreal experiences. The Abandoned Chapel (a quaint, church-like outdoor zone) was closed, so Klock was moved to the more intimate setting of the Forgotten Cabin – a techno haven, surrounding by trees, lamps and shed load of ravers. Klock is well-acquainted with commanding any crowd he comes across; his deep, dark and ruthless techno echoing into the woods with crowds begging for more. The music couldn’t go on much past 1am – after an unreal final set at The Lookout stage with Bicep – but the crowds back at the campsite didn’t let the party end until deep into the morning. A perfect close to an incredible first day.

Saturday brought an eclectic mix of acts to the forest; Artwork took over the Abandoned Chapel at 3pm, delivering a disco set with none-stop movement from the crowd – a nice change from the techno we’d be hearing everywhere else. The sun was beaming as Heidi took to the stage – you only have to experience one of her Jackathon events to know that she always delivers. It was wild, lively, and what can only be described as almost tropical, emphasising her place as one of the greatest female DJs we’ve had the pleasure of seeing.

The beauty of Lost Village isn’t just the music; it’s the experiences. One minute we’re in a comedy tent, the next we’re doing Yoga near a lake, the next we’re getting our face thwarted with glitter at the Illamasqua tent (a delightful addition). You wander through the woodland at 1am and meet people from all across the country, the festival empowering its ‘Good Vibes Only’ stance and bringing together people who are here purely to have the greatest time ever. There were characters at every corner, a haunting parade of old-fashioned, torch-grasping woodland dwellers marching through the forest, two life-size rats nibbling at people’s food and even a stunning contemporary dance of fairies by the Lake of Tranquility. Not to mention the food stalls from around the world, and quite frankly the greatest pulled pork burger I’ve ever experienced in my entire life. For a boutique festival, the experiences were larger than life.

As DC10 resident Jackmaster finished a happy yet hardcore set at the Burial Ground, we got to see the big man himself. Introduced as “One of the greatest DJs in the world”, Eats Everything played “absolute bangers” as the guy behind me screamed – and he was right. He knew how to get people on their feet, dancing, singing, blasting our crowd-pleasers and putting on insane build-up tunes that mad everyone lower to the ground and jump up at all once. Huge fireworks were blasting over at the lake, and it was a completely surreal time to be alive – just none-stop, perfect, fun times. This was something special.

As the hangovers started to kick in, Sunday’s vibe was a lot more relaxed; bands such as Vitamin and Formation provided a calm and enjoyable atmosphere at the Lookout to rival the thumping beats from Enzo Siragusa at the Forgotten Cabin, while ex-Coronation Street and Red Dwarf legend Craig Charles put on a soul-filled and funky set to a surprisingly massive crowd.

Roman Flugel played a calm, deep and dark techno set at the Cabin – naturally accompanied by a girl in the crowd climbing up to the top of a huge pole, sliding down to a crowd of screaming ravers. It was surreal and intense, but we wanted something a bit different – and we found it in the form of headliner Jack Garratt over at the main stage. For those who don’t know, Garratt is a multi-instrumentalist and singer, who plays live sets in the most incredible way. Everything was recorded then and there, his music completely enthralling the entire crowd who had left the techno behind to see him play. The talent this guy has is absolutely unbelievable, and such an incredible sight to see. It was a bit different, a bit dreamlike, and a bit unbelievable – and that definitely sums up Lost Village to a tee.

I can’t begin to put into words what Lost Village was like – it was an experience you have to see to believe. Magical, mystical and everything but normal, it’s an adventure like no other – next year, anyone?

Garden Party Leeds Review

The Garden Party is a two-day inner city festival in Leeds, set within the grounds of the Tetley Brewery. Taking place over the august bank holiday weekend the event showcased some of the finest music, food and art. Celebrating its 10th birthday (previously known as the Faversham Garden Party) the organisers teamed up with promoters Canal Mills, Chibuku, Warehouse Project, Now Wave and East Year Own Ears to curate this special edition.

Appealing to a broader spectrum of music fans the line up covered dance, electronica, disco, funk, garage and bass. Live acts included Roisin Murphy, Little Dragon, Todd Terje and Soul II Soul, alongside DJ sets from Bicep, Kerri Chandler, Heidi, Julio Bashmore, Black Coffee, Patrick Topping, Joy Orbison, B-Traits, Redlight, Preditah and the legendary Craig Charles.

There were five stages set across the Tetley site and each a stone’s throw from one another. Brightly covered bales of hay provided areas in which to socialise and soak up the atmosphere at the heat of the site. Food and drink was hosted by Leeds Indie Food Fest and offered punters an exceptionally high standard of delicious street food, craft ales and cocktails. Affordable and tasty local treats were provided by from Chicken Bang Bang, Boozy BBQ, Bánh Mì Booth, Pizza Fella, Rola Wala and the ice-cream from the coolest looking van around Northern BloC. Much to my delight it was a very mixed crowd with a range of ages, proving that the lure of good grub and without the muddy fields seems to be the way that many people want to spend their weekend. Complimenting the food and music bill was colourful temporary art installations and live drawing by local artists throughout the weekend.

Here are some of my highlights from the weekend:

Black Coffee

Black Coffee seemed to be the hot tip on every ones lips, so we headed over to The Fact stage to see what all the hype was about. Black Coffee (known as Nathi to his friends) is a multi award winning producer and superstar DJ hailing from Durban. He’s been active on the South African music scene for over a decade now, but it’s only been recently that his meteoric rise has seen him play at some of the top clubs and festivals globally.

His set was laced with tantalising tribal beats and flavoursome house, mixing up a smooth set of expertly blended tunes like Ian Pooley – Compurhythm, Mr.V – Jus Dance, Culoe De Song – Y.O.U.D and ending on the epic Chew Fu’s Purple Rain (Mousse T mix). I don’t usually hang around for a full DJ set but we couldn’t pull ourselves away for the full two hours, it was completely mesmerising and he certainly lived up the hype.

Craig Charles

On Sunday afternoon Craig Charles brought his funk soul sound to the Just A Little stage.  Such a high profile DJ was always bound to draw a big crowd and once again the tent was packed to the rafters with everyone ready to groove and shake. There were a whole host of familiar classics from rare groove and snippets of funk and soul packed into his energetic set.  He doesn’t do dj’ing by halves; the man was completely going for it, working up a sweat and working the crowd like a dream. My feet were aching from bouncing up and down at the side of the stage with the hugest of grins – the good vibes were totally infectious and everyone there was fully in on this blissful groovefest.

Preditah

Saturday afternoon saw Birmingham’s finest Preditah play to hyped crowd that spilled outside the Metropolis tent. His grimy and bassy set featured his hits Selecta, Circles, Supernaturally as well dropping 90’s and garage-influenced set of songs. We caught up with Jordan & Jamie from Leeds “Preditah was absolutely nuts, especially the first hour. It was so up-tempo and bassy and he really knows how to play the crowd.”

Todd Terje

As Sunday evening fell the main stage numbers started to swell and Norwegian disco deity Todd Terje took to the stage. His continuous live instrumental set featured his well-known songs Dolorean Dynamite, StrandbarSwing Star and Svensk Sås. It was clear that most people in the crowd were eagerly awaiting Inspector Norse, which rightly the crowd went berserk to when he went into the extended intro. My only disappointment was that he had got rid of his amazing beard. Please Todd grow it back or at the very least breakout the sequins.

All in all this was a beautifully crafted metropolitan festival, offering an array of music, feasts and culture, making it a perfect way to spend a bank holiday weekend – well done Garden Party Leeds, you definitely know how to throw a party.

MADE Birmingham 2015 Review

Whilst many of the big festivals were coping with mud over the weekend we were thankful that our Brummie feet were firmly on solid ground as we arrived for MADE. With a line up that boasts heavyweight names such as MK, Heidi, Claude Von Stroke, Julio Bashmore and David Rodigan, as well as prominent local acts Tom Shorterz and Adam Shelton, there was plenty for everyone in this urban playground.

MADE is a mini Metropolitan festival that brought ravers from all corners into the heart of Birmingham city. Now in its second year, the site had been expanded to include six stages set across the Digbeth triangle and the Rainbow complex. In keeping with the creative melting pot of the area, that ethos was very much evident in the site production from the epic wall mural by Newso & Gent48, live graffiti art and illustrative signage.

First up was veteran DJ and reggae selector David ‘Ram Jam’ Rodigan on the Heavyweight Bass Champion stage, a boxing ring with caliber of booming bass and DnB acts to match. 40 years in the business and David still knows how to rock a crowd. He invited all the ‘young tongue shooters to take a trip to Jamaica’ with him as he spun tunes from reggae, dance hall and DnB. He bounced around with the energy of a teenager, puffing out his chest and rewinding the decks, it was a pure joy to watch.

Next up was Norman Jay MBE playing from a fire exit high above the car park. The Bloc Party stage set up wasn’t a massive success and it was a shame to see Normal play to smaller numbers than expected. The VIP terrace above the Warehouse offered the best views over the main stage and revellers danced with the inflatables in the hazy afternoon sun. We stopped for some much needed respite with a delicious gourmet pizza from Baked-in Brick.

Back on the Heavyweight stage was beat-box extraordinaire Beardyman and friends for the ‘Bass Battle Off’. DJs Pete Graham, Marc Spence and Santero went back to back with only 7 minutes to impress the audience. We darted round the site, catching glimpses of sets from Korupt FM, Stanton Warriors, and Blonde who performed live as confetti cannons launched multi coloured flakes into the sky of the main arena. Julio Bashmore and Dusky were the stars of the Underground stage as they played to hyped punters in dark sweat-box of a room.

A packed out crowed gathered at the main stage anticipation for the headline act.  It seemed as if most people had come to see MK (Marc Kinchen) as the other stages emptied out. As his first record dropped confetti cannons boomed, followed by smoke jets and fire streams lighting up the crowd. His set was bursting with techno and club classics including remixes of Rudimental’s ‘Powerless’, Bakermat’s ‘Teach me’, Dumont’s ‘The giver’ to the crowd pleasing anthemic sing-a-long moment ‘My head is a jungle’. MK dived into the crowd at the end of his set and was hoisted up on to shoulders for the fireworks finale whilst Low steppa took up the mantle.

We caught up with Pete Jordan festival organiser about the challenges of delivering 11,000 capacity inner-city festival. “Digbeth is a unbelievable place and we had the opportunity to go bigger. We have had a phenomenal amount of support from the council, police and emergency services.”

“Having the indoor and outdoor spaces created a different vibe and we tried to put a bit of personality into each individual stage. Delivering bass music in a conceptual form such as a boxing ring makes people experience the music in different way. To see some of these stages really come off makes me really proud.”

It was clear the festival was a big hit with the punters too. Carly Banks from Staffs said “I have literally had the best day/night of my life!!! so unexpected and so worth it!!!!!”

Despite the terrible weather on Sunday they still had good numbers through the door for Made by Day. The organisers worked quickly to relocate as much of it indoors at the rainbow complex. There was a great selection of food available from gourmet burgers, pizzas, Caribbean, North African, Thai from Digbeth Dining Club regulars, as well as comedy, music and retro gaming from Dead Pixels.

Made my day was a great success and provided thousands with the best in bass and dance to party through day and night. We’re already looking forward to what 2016 has to offer.

Miguel Poveda Flamenco Festival Review

When a tannoy booms out over the sticky-hot concert hall of Malaga’s Cervantes Theatre announcing that the concert will begin in two minutes, the thrill of expectation is tangible. Named for Don Quixote´s creator,  this 19th century theatre located on a marble-paved square hidden in the warren of Malaga’s cobbled backstreets is the fitting setting for the concert of Miguel Poveda, the 42 year old singer who has been described as ‘one of the best flamenco artists of his generation’.

From my ornate four-seater opera box, I stare out over the audience. Every seat facing the narrow proscenium stage is taken, which is a huge tribute from this province where everyone lives and breathes flamenco, and where some of Spain´s greatest artists – ranging from Juan Breva and Paca Aguillera, to La Trini and El Nino de Velez – were born.  When the concert starts there is a sudden hush, which is an even greater tribute from this southern Spanish audience who generally greet every event of their lives at top volume.

The lights lift in a wide fan, illuminating Poveda and his seven piece band. He is small, with fine hands and expressive features. Despite singing with top artists, including Paco de Lucia and Passion Vega, Poveda is a humble artist and before he swings into his first number he tells the audience how much their participation gives him the courage to sing his songs: “Your heart gives my heart strength,” he tells them. They respond with cheers and friendly catcalls asking him to sing this, or that favourite song.

He explains  that there will be three parts to the two-hour show  First he says that he will sing his favourite songs ´because I enjoy doing them.” Next he tell us that he will sing the flamenco numbers and the third act will include several Argentine ballads.

If the first part of the show is enjoyable and the third part polished, the flamenco section is startling in its intensity. I thought that Poveda was sweating because of the 29 centigrade temperatures, but Miguel Poveda is an artist who sweats every line, every movement of the music he sings. When he interprets works by the great poet, Lorca, I don’t need to understand the words in order to   grasp the meaning of these Cante Jondo songs about broken hearts, death and despair – Poveda is like Houdini: a contortionist of flamenco art who wrings every meaning from every syllable and every tremulous note.

As Lorca stipulated in his famous lecture on the subject of Duende: ‘that mysterious power that everyone feels but no philosopher can explain’, Poveda battles with Duende and he surrenders to Duende. Best of all he takes his audience along for a roller coaster ride.

Massive Back To Back DJ Set’s announced for Exit Festival

This years Exit Festival brings some of the biggest names in dance music together for a batch of back to back DJ sets.  The Summer Festival Guide has the complete set lineup which will set the Exit Festival Dance Arena on fire.

AFROJACK VS QUINTINO
Afrojack is one of the hottest EDM music maestros, and most influential DJs and producers. At just 26 this young man accomplished a lot! He’s got a Grammy under his belt, and has been in the top 10 best DJs list for three years by DJ Magazine; Forbes tips him as the seventh most paid DJ on the planet, and he’s even dated Paris Hilton! His awesome track "Selecta" brought together the young Dutchman with his country-man Quintino, so their duo set is going to show just who reigns the EDM scene.

MACEO PLEX VS DANNY DAZE
Two of the hottest DJs of the moment, Maceo Plex and Danny Daze found out they shared the same urge to get people dancing. Maceo Plex's cuban heritage fits perfectly with the Cuban influences that, along with Italo disco and techno, make up  Danny Daze's sets. This duo collaborated before and pushed tracks under the combo-alias 'Jupiter Jazz', and they're definitely the hottest, most-wanted thing happening in electronic music right now.

TIGA VS DJ HELL
We promised we'd get exclusive b2b sets at Dance Arena for our 15th EXIT jubilee, but we're going to do one better – our festival will be the place where the divergent come together in confluence; where the electro colossi that never performed and for the first time ever, step together onto the same mix-table. Those colossi are none other than Tiga and DJ Hell! Tiga, the author of monumental hits like "Sunglasses at Night" and "You Gonna Want Me",  and our dear friend of the festival and a welcome guest, will go head-to-head with the owner of the International DeeJay Gigolo label and one of the most creative and best german DJs ever – DJ Hell! Hell has a reputation that proceeds him and his first ever performance on the Dance Arena is certainly been hotly anticipated.

HEIDI VS KIM ANN FOXMAN

We have the highest honour of welcoming two exceptionally irresistible dames this year, who both have an uncanny infatuation with the dance floor and house music – Heidi and Kim Ann Foxman. No stranger to the Dance Arena, Heidi is infectious as she is passionate. To truly feel the insatiable passion Heidi has for music, you need only listen to her show on BBC Radio 1, or just visit one of the many Jackathon parties organised worldwide. If by any chance you're unable to do that, Dance Arena will be more than happy to oblige. Kim Ann Foxman is better known to some as the ex-member of Hercules & Love Affair, but she-s been devoted 100% to her gigs – from Tokyo to Cologne to Chicago – all the while ranking up her reputation as one of the most interesting house players in the scene. These ladies are going to be delighting us with their performance and this will be one set that will be truly spectacular.

DANCE ARENA BACK TO BACK SPECIALS
Afrojack vs Quintino, Carl Cox vs Danny Tenaglia, Ben Klock vs Marcel Dettmann, Carl Craig vs Green Velvet, Dusky vs Paul Woolford, Eats Everything vs Cassy, Heidi vs Kim Ann Foxman, Maceo Plex vs Danny Daze, Tiga vs DJ Hell, Jackmaster & Oneman presents 'Can U Dance' with more to be announced and not forgetting Disclosure presents Wildlife making the Dance Arena the place to be this summer!

South West Four adds Laurent Garnier and more to lineup

London's premier electronic music festival South West Four reveals another batch of artists for this years summer festival at the iconic Clapham Common.

Hot on the heels of the last announcement, the latest additions include Laurnet Garnier, Maya Jane Coles, Heidi, Claude Vonstroke, Catz N Dogz and Kim Ann Foxman.

Having enjoyed a meteoric rise up the electronic music ladder since 2011, Maya Jane Coles returns to South West Four this year. Her deep and enticing sounds have resulted in huge interest in her underground productions and performances at the world’s most discerning nightclubs. With an ability to seduce the mind into unchartered territory, Maya’s work as a DJ, producer, audio engineer and artwork designer has been echoed around the planet. The 2013 release of ‘Comfort’ backed this up to dramatic effect, as did her superb ‘Easier to Hide’. This will be Maya’s first performance at SW4 since 2012 and her first set in London in seven months. When it comes to females leading the charge in electronic music, Maya is definitely at the forefront. We cannot wait to welcome her back.

As one of the finest musicians to have ever graced the world of dance music, it’s an honour to welcome back the legendary Laurent Garnier for his third performance at SW4 in four years. Laurent has kept the world grooving for nearly thirty years with one of the most celebrated back catalogues of electronic productions known to exist. After destroying Clapham Common with an exquisite set last year, every effort has gone into bringing this SW4 favourite back for another dose of his enthralling techno. Garnier’s ability to keep his sets as fresh and original as possible can be is reflected by his relentless quest to unearth the very best new music. Returning to SW4 in a London festival exclusive for 2014, we cannot wait to welcome this godfather back for another masterclass.

As one of most respected and influential figures over the past decade, Dirtybird Records boss Claude VonStroke returns to our hallowed turf on Sunday 24th August for his first SW4 performance since 2008. Born and raised in Detroit, Claude’s electrifying sounds, combined with his contagious personality, makes him one of the industry’s most exciting players. Having relentlessly toured every major city, festival, basement and after party around the world, last summer witnessed the launch of his Dirtybird residency at Sankey Ibiza where he hosted one of the White Isle’s most popular weekly parties. Building on thisremarkable success for 2014, Claude’s status as a pioneering game-changer will again be illustrated via his outstanding multi-deck wizardry at SW4.

Whether it’s through performing at the scene’s most dominant clubs and festivals, her worldwide Jackathon parties or her BBC Radio 1 residency show, it’s clear that Heidi’s hard-hitting grooves will go down a storm when she makes her SW4 debut this summer. As a firm favourite on the White Isle, 2013 witnessed Heidi play at Space for Carl Cox’s ‘The Revolution’, Richie Hawtin’s ‘Enter’, and ‘We Love’, in addition toSolomun’s party at Pacha and Jamie Jones’ ‘Paradise’ at DC10. With releases on Jackathon Jams and Get Physical, Heidi’s sets are a mixture of the freshest house, techno and disco around, with her South West Four debut on course to be one of the weekend’s most memorable highlights. SW4 get ready to Jack, as we welcome Heidi for a performance you simply won’t forget.

As we continue to keep things as fresh as possible for 2014, Clapham Common will welcome one of the dance music’s favourite duos for their SW4 debut and exclusive London festival performance. After heightening their esteemed reputation even further throughout the past twelve months with pivotal tracks ‘Evil Tram’ and ‘Hush’ gaining monumental support from the likes of Eats Everything and Justin Martin, we can confirm that Pets Recordings bosses and Dirtybird favourites Catz N Dogz are finally on their way to South London. With an insatiable appetite for success, Catz N Dogz are one of house music’s most dominating forces, with huge interest in their talents. As the pair look forward to an even bigger twelve months, backed up by the recent release of ‘Bones Shakin’ and ‘Booty Comes First’, we are delighted thatSW4 has been selected as their London festival of choice.

Recognised as one of the most sought after up-and-coming DJs in dance music, we are delighted to announce that the formidable Kim Ann-Foxman will also be joining us this August. Having made a name for herself in her hometown of New York, Kim’s natural ability was quickly picked up as vocalist for the Hercules & Love Affair’s two hugely successful albums. She has since gone onto tour the world’s finest clubs and festivals as a solo artist. Boasting some of the most intense grooves you are likely to hear at SW4 this summer, this will be the first time that Kim returns to London after her stellar performance at Eats Everything’s XOYO residency. Her production ability is improving by the hour with her latest track ‘Burning Bright’ alongside long-term friend Maya Jane Coles receiving unconditional support, whilst her remix duties are also being exercised to the max.

Lazarus has been a central driving force in the world domination of second-wave house thanks to a truly exceptional ear for the sound, prevalent in his skills as Crosstown’s chief A&R and the stellar line-ups that assemble at his highly acclaimed Day Zero festival in Mexico. Ever evolving, unsurpassed in his feel for the depth of the music, Damian is a headliner set to surprise. There aren’t many DJs who’ve received a sitting ovation on the dancefloor but Damian Lazarus is definitely one of them.
