deadmau5 returns to London to headline South West 4 2017

Visionary. Pioneer. Geniu5. These are some of the words that have been used to describe your Sunday night headliner.  Deadmau5 is regarded amongst the elite of electronic music artists that have ever stepped foot on the planet. Back in London for the first time in three years, Sunday 27th August 2017 will witness the Mau5’ return to London following his last appearance in the city which witnessed him dominate the SW4 main stage in 2014. Fast-forward to 2017 and he is back with a vengeance with a brand new album and ready to tour the globe with jaw-dropping and stunning production levels. With a 22 date US tour on the horizon and a brand new residency on BBC Radio 1, there is no doubt that one of the greatest producers on the planet is on a mission to demonstrate why he is #1!

An absolute titan of house and techno, Marco Carola is the undisputed leader of a hugely competitive scene. The man from Naples has been championing his sound across the globe for many years now and his hugely popular Music On parties have captured the imagination of the dance music community. His weekly summer residency at the world famous Amnesia Ibiza has seen him regularly break attendance records at the huge Balearic venue. His dominance is so much so that he has now started his own festival in the clubbing city that is Amsterdam as he continues his world domination. We cannot wait to welcome the one and only Marco Carola back to SW4!

The London duo are deep in preparation for their new LIVE tour as they set to embark on a series of sold out shows across the country showcasing their latest productions. Their vocal & synth-led productions have allowed them to standout amongst a plethora of hugely talented acts around them. Dusky Live, Clapham Common, Sunday 27th August. This will be special…

Born in Southampton, Raised in Manchester, based in L.A, Gareth Emery’s tour schedule doesn’t look too dissimilar to that. Always jet setting from one side of the world to another, Gareth is one of the hardest working DJs out there.  His last visit to the capital witnessed a sold out show at the world-famous Roundhouse in Camden as an army of Gareth’s fans descended to the North London venue. A regular at London’s longest standing weekly night, The Gallery at Ministry of Sound, he knows the lay of the land and will absolutely smash Clapham Common to pieces come August Bank Holiday!

Matador’s formidable LIVE show has been a constant talking point in dance music as the Irish man has been working tirelessly to perfect his energetic sound. A regular guest at Richie Hawtin’s ENTER party, he has been performing extensively in Ibiza and at Enter events all over the world from Brixton to Amsterdam and farther afield in Los Angeles and Miami. Now looking to take his career to the next level, Gavin Lynch aka Matador is definitely one to watch for 2017 and we are eagerly awaiting his performance on the beautiful landscape of the Common!

Nicky Romero has stamped his authority in the electronic music scene with the Dutch maestro considered to be one of the leading exponents of the high octane sound that has dominated many parts of the world in recent years. A consistent over achiever in everything he does, Nicky is used to playing to thousands of reveler’s worldwide as he sells out clubs from Europe to Asia. Bank Holiday Weekend will no different as thousands of Londoners descend onto the Common.

Since their inception in 2005, Pan-Pot have become a dominant presence in modern techno, an ascent mirrored in the rise of their home label Mobilee records to the top tier of electronic music. Tagging themselves as “the dark side of the force,” Pan-Pot have melted minds, warped perceptions and reinvigorated the dance floor with their heavy, unorthodox sound. We cannot wait to welcome this techno heavyweight back to Clapham Common for what’s sure to be a bold and uncompromising performance!

The brothers from the Bronx have been nothing short of a sensation in the electronic music scene in recent years. The Martinez Brothers’ burst onto the scene at the early age of fifteen and have been one of the leaders in the global house music scene since then. Holding a residency at the world-famous DC-10 since 2011, their high-energy performances and in-depth-knowledge of house music have made them favourites across dance floors worldwide. The brothers will be making their SW4 debut this summer and their unique ability to guide the crowd through a musical journey like no other means they are the perfect addition to what’s already shaping up to be a huge house and techno line up at SW4 Sunday…

When you put together one of the most respected artists in the UK scene with another that is carving his own way to becoming the same, you get Chris Lorenzo back to back with DJ Zinc. Zinc has been one of the most prolific and talented artists in the scene for over two decades and his recent tour schedule means he’s definitely not looking to slow down. On the other hand. Lorenzo has received huge critical acclaim for his new album and is destined for great things. We can’t wait for this world-exclusive back to back which is sure to blow the roof off!

MADE Birmingham 2015 Review

Whilst many of the big festivals were coping with mud over the weekend we were thankful that our Brummie feet were firmly on solid ground as we arrived for MADE. With a line up that boasts heavyweight names such as MK, Heidi, Claude Von Stroke, Julio Bashmore and David Rodigan, as well as prominent local acts Tom Shorterz and Adam Shelton, there was plenty for everyone in this urban playground.

MADE is a mini Metropolitan festival that brought ravers from all corners into the heart of Birmingham city. Now in its second year, the site had been expanded to include six stages set across the Digbeth triangle and the Rainbow complex. In keeping with the creative melting pot of the area, that ethos was very much evident in the site production from the epic wall mural by Newso & Gent48, live graffiti art and illustrative signage.

First up was veteran DJ and reggae selector David ‘Ram Jam’ Rodigan on the Heavyweight Bass Champion stage, a boxing ring with caliber of booming bass and DnB acts to match. 40 years in the business and David still knows how to rock a crowd. He invited all the ‘young tongue shooters to take a trip to Jamaica’ with him as he spun tunes from reggae, dance hall and DnB. He bounced around with the energy of a teenager, puffing out his chest and rewinding the decks, it was a pure joy to watch.

Next up was Norman Jay MBE playing from a fire exit high above the car park. The Bloc Party stage set up wasn’t a massive success and it was a shame to see Normal play to smaller numbers than expected. The VIP terrace above the Warehouse offered the best views over the main stage and revellers danced with the inflatables in the hazy afternoon sun. We stopped for some much needed respite with a delicious gourmet pizza from Baked-in Brick.

Back on the Heavyweight stage was beat-box extraordinaire Beardyman and friends for the ‘Bass Battle Off’. DJs Pete Graham, Marc Spence and Santero went back to back with only 7 minutes to impress the audience. We darted round the site, catching glimpses of sets from Korupt FM, Stanton Warriors, and Blonde who performed live as confetti cannons launched multi coloured flakes into the sky of the main arena. Julio Bashmore and Dusky were the stars of the Underground stage as they played to hyped punters in dark sweat-box of a room.

A packed out crowed gathered at the main stage anticipation for the headline act.  It seemed as if most people had come to see MK (Marc Kinchen) as the other stages emptied out. As his first record dropped confetti cannons boomed, followed by smoke jets and fire streams lighting up the crowd. His set was bursting with techno and club classics including remixes of Rudimental’s ‘Powerless’, Bakermat’s ‘Teach me’, Dumont’s ‘The giver’ to the crowd pleasing anthemic sing-a-long moment ‘My head is a jungle’. MK dived into the crowd at the end of his set and was hoisted up on to shoulders for the fireworks finale whilst Low steppa took up the mantle.

We caught up with Pete Jordan festival organiser about the challenges of delivering 11,000 capacity inner-city festival. “Digbeth is a unbelievable place and we had the opportunity to go bigger. We have had a phenomenal amount of support from the council, police and emergency services.”

“Having the indoor and outdoor spaces created a different vibe and we tried to put a bit of personality into each individual stage. Delivering bass music in a conceptual form such as a boxing ring makes people experience the music in different way. To see some of these stages really come off makes me really proud.”

It was clear the festival was a big hit with the punters too. Carly Banks from Staffs said “I have literally had the best day/night of my life!!! so unexpected and so worth it!!!!!”

Despite the terrible weather on Sunday they still had good numbers through the door for Made by Day. The organisers worked quickly to relocate as much of it indoors at the rainbow complex. There was a great selection of food available from gourmet burgers, pizzas, Caribbean, North African, Thai from Digbeth Dining Club regulars, as well as comedy, music and retro gaming from Dead Pixels.

Made my day was a great success and provided thousands with the best in bass and dance to party through day and night. We’re already looking forward to what 2016 has to offer.

Lost Village 2015 Review

Buried in the Lincolnshire countryside, 5,000 party-goers descend upon the idyllic woodland setting of Lost Village festival. Taking place over the May bank-holiday weekend in an “ancient abandoned village”, the festival’s motto is to “join the tribe”. Set up by Moda’s Jaymo & Andy George – who later play a sparkling set on Saturday afternoon – the location is perfect for the acts performing; eclectic electronica from Die Vogel and Four Tet, crowd-pleasing sets from Ben Pearce and Annie Mac, and heavier techno-based sounds from Tale of Us, Jasper James and Gardens of God.

Aside from one shower, the usually temperamental English weather holds up, offering sun throughout the whole weekend – Summer Festival Guide even returns home with a tan! Transport-wise, there is a free shuttle bus; impressive for a first-time festival. SFG meets people who have travelled up from the Midlands, London, and one electronic music lover who has travelled four hours from Brighton.

Set behind a lakeside family campsite, it’s like a whole other realm. Attracting a multitude of types of people; when setting up camp, one middle-aged man sporting a Blasé Boys Club t-shirt is drinking with those who could be his children. Everyone who SFG meets is friendly and really here for the music.

Reasonably priced Vodka and cokes begin to flow throughout Grandmaster Flash’s charismatic old-school set, declaring the festival open on Friday evening at Basecamp. Though licensing requires music to finish at midnight each night, back in camp there’s no sign of sleeping until the early hours.

[Special mention to Diamond Dogs, who provided the best post-drinking cure with their Chilli Cheese Dogs and Tater Tots]

It’s Saturday morning, the sun is shining through the campsite and anticipation is high to see Lost Village’s main stages; the Abandoned Chapel, Forgotten Cabin and The Ruins, each with impeccable sound-systems and impressive set-design. At midday, Citizenn opens the Cabin with a groove-laden house set before Jackmaster’s housemate Jasper James – a personal highlight – delivers hard-hitting tech-house, and as one Villager suggests, “its 3 in the morning vibes at 1 in the afternoon”, another gushing, “I feel like I’m in Berghain!”

Later, Erol Alkan delivers an acidic electro set like a true professional, looking suave in a leather jacket, before Denmark’s Kolsch plays what everyone wants to hear; Huxley’s ‘I Want You’ and Adesse Versions’ ‘Pride’ make much-appreciated appearances as well as his own euphoric piano-led ‘Cassiopeia’. Over at The Ruins, Lost Village’s mud-filled main stage, Dusky’s ‘Yoohoo’ is blasting through the industrial-sized speakers to the packed crowd as one partyer holds up an LED lit ‘TUNE’ sign. Back at the Cabin, Four Tet closes the first night in magical, enchanted fashion; his Martyn-collaboration ‘Glassbeadgames’ becoming a highlight as the vibrant strobes light up the darkness.

Come Sunday morning, Ejeca’s defying the traditional day of rest, delivering tech-house at the Abandoned Chapel, as one guy dressed like Fryar Tuck with a massive tribal stick urges the crowd on. Theo Kottis, Moda Black’s newest signing, continues on a similar vibe at the Cabin as glittered faces – old and young – tribal hennas and selfie sticks are visible at every turn, watching the darkly uplifting set; Guy Gerber’s remix of Art Department’s ‘Catch You By Surprise’ really goes off.

Tourist attracts a massive crowd to the ruins, performing with synth pads and keyboards; Pretend, Trust In You and I Can’t Keep Up translate effortlessly in Lost Village’s mud-covered main stage The Ruins.  With a massive ‘U’ behind him, the co-writer to Sam Smith’s ‘Stay With Me’ introduces Anywhere, a new track from his debut album, appropriately titled ‘U’.

“How great is this festival?” asks William Phillips aka Tourist. It’s a statement which becomes heavily echoed over the course of the first ever Lost Village. Considering this is its debut year, Lost Village has the potential to rival the likes of Secret Garden Party in the not so distant future.

Later, after stumbling across a fake marriage – Lost Village has a plethora of spooky actors waiting at every turn – Tale Of Us deliver an intense techno set as the Forgotten Cabin’s strobes light up one of the weekend’s biggest audiences.

Jackmaster, sporting a ‘We Love Detroit’ t-shirt, follows, playing a typically eclectic set of house, techno and everything in between. Meanwhile, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs aka Orlando Higginbottom seems on a completely different trip in The Ruins; dropping drum & bass and jungle tracks, it’s a refreshing break from the weekend’s house/techno sound, before Annie Mac closes out the first ever Lost Village with on-point house tracks.

Over the course of the weekend, SFG have brushed shoulders – and taken selfies with – Annie Mac, Richy Ahmed and Tourist. It’s not often that such big names are within arms length walking through the woodland setting.

Post-festival, Lost Village’s founders Jaymo & Andy George have commented: “We never in our wildest dreams expected it to go this well! The crowd were 10/10, every stage was constantly busy, all the artists who played have said amazingly positive things and all those little elements we planned came together just how we hoped. The feedback we’ve been getting since has been unreal… we can’t wait to start planning the next one now.”

2016s Lost Village couldn’t roll around any quicker!

Playing at EXIT for the first time will be the unstoppable British duo DISCLOSURE, who set new foundations when it comes to electronic music, proving that alternative electronic music can succeed in the commercial music world with no compromise whatsoever. Brothers Guy (22) and Howard (19) Lawrence already have a name to themselves, proven by sold-out performances and chart-topping tracks, as well as a significant change in the British electronic music scene which opens doors to many new underground talents. This year, they released their debut album Settle which has already reached number one at the UK Album Chart, and was also nominated for the Best Album at the Mercury Awards 2013 and Best Dance/Electronica Album at the Grammy Awards 2014. For the upcoming Brit Awards, Disclosure are nominated in four categories: MasterCard British Album of the Year, British Single, British Group, as well as British Breakthrough Act, also announcing a special performance at the awards featuring one of the hottest new names, the New Zealand singer Lorde. They are coming to EXIT Festival with their live set, which is praised as one of the best live performances in the world of electronic music.

Celebrating the 15th Edition in true EXIT style, the iconic Dance Arena will do the second part of their infamous back to back sets revered in 2009 for their 10th Edition. This year sees another selection of DJs performing in battle and it’s going to be another memorable year.

First up is Carl Craig vs Green Velvet. Electronic music visionary and the creative magnate, Carl Craig, owner of the eponymous label Planet E is going to shake the Dance Arena once again, and joined by Green Velvet will be here to elevate partying to the fullest! This year, in a special b2b session with Carl Craig, he is ready to pump up EXIT’s Dance Arena!

Next up is Dusky vs Paul Woolford. The London duo Dusky have proven very productive and imaginative when it comes to writing elegant orchestral grooves and piano themes, as well as creating heavier house and techno rhythms, and this is exactly what defines their genre – composing electronic music with a significant touch of depth, soul and originality. After several joint gigs, a special chemistry arose between them and Paul Woolford, also known as Special Request, a man who built his flourishing career as a DJ, producer, label owner, remixer, collaborator and experimentalist.

And finally introducing Jackmaster & Oneman presents Can U Dance, a new show being showcased at only a handful of shows this summer, which promises a great party on four turntables! Oneman is a synonym for Rinse FM, a very well known radio station, a brand and a subculture. Jackmaster not only is a co-founder of the highly influential label Numbers, but is also an amazing DJ – he simply lives to play people records, which is enormously felt in his eclectic sets, containing a wide span of music, from forgotten classics to some of the hottest dance floor hits. Together, they will present a concept that surpasses the idea of b2b without great manifesto or conceptual nonsense, no masks or go-go dancers, it's all about what comes out of those speakers. Yes, U Can Dance.

Joining the already announced Skrillex, Rudimental, Dub Fx And Koven the 15th edition of EXIT Festival will be marked with the sign of EXIT ADVENTURE, which will take us to EXIT, held from July 10th to 13th at the Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, continuing at SEA DANCE FESTIVAL, held from July 15 to 17 at the beautiful Adriatic Jaz Beach in Montenegro. The Enemy confirmed for Jersey Live

Jersey Live Festival with JT celebrates its 10th anniversary:
31st August – 1st September at the Royal Jersey Showground, Jersey

SUBJECT TO ORGANISERS GAINING THE BAILIFF'S PERMISSION

Jersey Live Festival returns this summer, supported for the 8th year by headline sponsors JT, for its 10th anniversary event. Following the recent announcements that Bastille and Gabrielle Aplin will join the Sunday (1st September) Main Stage bill, they announce the latest wave of artists that complete the Main Stage line up for that day.

First up are Coventry indie rockers The Enemy, who return to Jersey Live after having first appeared here at the 2007 event. The trio return as seasoned indie stars, with three UK Top 10 albums under their belt (2007’s We’ll Live and Die in These Towns, 2009’s Music for the People and last year’s Streets in the Sky) and more than their fair share of sell out tours, unforgettable festival performances and tours alongside British rock legends to speak of. Fronted by Tom Clarke, The Enemy’s Jam, Oasis and Rolling Stones-influenced brand of rock n’ roll has rightly gained them a reputation as one of the most ferociously exciting and honest bands plying their trade in the UK today.

Completing Sunday’s Main Stage line up are Los Angeles guitar n’ drums duo Deap Vally aka Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards, whose blistering brand of scuzzy, in-your-face garage rock has drawn comparisons with The White Stripes and Led Zeppelin. Since exploding on to the UK scene in 2012, Deap Vally have gone on to perform at the Reading and Latitude festivals, support The Vaccines on tour and in December the band opened for Muse on several dates of their European tour. Their debut single ‘End of the World’ was selected as Zane Lowe’s ‘Hottest Record in the World’ on his Radio One show, and their debut album Sistrionix is released on Island Records on June 24th.

With the Sunday Main Stage line up now complete, we can also announce the latest addition to the Hospitality Stage line up. Joining John Cooper Clarke, Craig Charles and many more is comedian Simon Evans. A mainstay on the UK standup circuit, his appearances on Mock the Week, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow and Live at the Apollo have made him a household name in recent years, and a cynical, sarcastic style has seen him lauded by influential comedy review site Chortle for his ‘sharp, acidic barb’ and as ‘a rich delight’.

Keep your eyes peeled for line up announcements, to be made in the coming weeks! For more information, please visit www.jerseylive.org.uk
