Dreadzone to headline Undercover Festival 2016

Undercover Festival today announced Dreadzone as the headline act for Saturday 10th September at Brighton Racecourse.

“We are really pleased to be able to welcome Dreadzone who headlined our very first night on our very first festival back to Undercover Festival as our headline act on Sat 10th Sept 2016” said Festival Organiser Mick Moriarty.

Saturdays line up of Dreadzone, Sonic Boom Six, Spear of Destiny, Eddie & The Hotrods, XSLF (X Stiff Little Fingers), Radical Dance Faction, Spizzenergi, Anti Pasti, The Cravats, Witchdoktors, 1919, Pussycat & The Dirty Johnsons, Dragster, Church of Eon, Piranhas 4, Pints, Mick O’Toole, Rage DC, Emergency Bitter, Knock Off, Skaciety, Vikki Vortex & The *** S***s, R.E.D, Archive45, Punka, plus many other bands including a host of cracking emerging local bands and so much more over three stages is shaping up to be the strongest Saturday line up ever at Undercover.

With Fridays line up as well including The Selecter, Peter & The Test Tube Babies, 999, Chelsea, Sex Pistols Experience, The JB Conspiracy, Department S, Menace, The Meow Meows, Criminal Mind, Riskee & The Ridicule, Tree House Fire, Charred Hearts, and many more on the line-up over the weekend, we believe we have most bases covered.

This year’s Undercover Festival has moved to Brighton Racecourse and is once again held undercover i.e. not outdoors so if it’s peeing down come September it’s not a problem and your beer won’t get diluted. Leave your wellies at home, and enjoy one of the best small alternative festivals the South has to offer this September.

The festival is one that prides itself on taking an independent and grassroots approach to things, and is always determined to be different from mainstream events.

As the name suggests, it’s an indoor event but with two days of alternative action from bands you’d be highly unlikely to see on many other festival line-ups.

Mick Moriarty said: “We believe the usual run-of-the-mill festivals tend to book bands that in the main are broadly similar – and way too safe! We try for a line up and experience that is something different and appeals to a crowd not catered for elsewhere.

“Being a small independent grassroots festival is tough because media attention is always on the big boys. But we’ve got through to our fourth year and we’re going strong because what we have created really has struck a chord with people who like their music raw and full of the passion and energy that only acts like ours generate.”

The festival grew out of a small tent tucked in the back corner of the sadly departed GuilFest in Surrey and has now become a firm fixture in many people’s diaries, with dedicated fans coming back year on year.

UNDERCOVER FESTIVAL set in and around the unique setting of Brighton Racecourse, a festival venue and experience that defies all other conventions and festival templates.

The nature of the venue ensures that everything is nearby; no long walks between stages, parking is free, and camping is available literally a short one minute walk from the festival proper.

In a financial climate where it always seems to be about the money, Undercover throws convention to the wind and just goes with what it believes in. There is a huge line up and tickets can be bought in advance online of from various locations details from www.undercoverfest.com

Beat-Herder turns 10 with Basement Jaxx and more

Over the last decade, Beat-Herder has come to be known for its unrivalled attention to detail when building the site. Built entirely from scratch by hand, the festival houses all manner of surprises at every twist and turn. Each year unexpected new areas magically appear for festival-goers to stumble upon. Last year’s new additions included a swimming pool in the woods, housed in a Scandinavian style wooden cabin, complete with changing rooms and lifeguards and The Ring, a huge earth mound with a Stonehenge-esque entrance.

This year Beat-Herder was crowned winner of the Extra Festival Activity Award at the UK Festival Awards, an award that recognises events that paid that extra bit of attention to detail that creates a magical and unforgettable festival experience.

Today, the first names for the special 10th anniversary edition of the festival are announced. Headlining the festival on Friday will be Basement Jaxx, the dancefloor conquering duo whose prolific output over the last 10 years is responsible for shaping UK dance music as we know it today. Considered by many to be national treasures, their back catalogue contains hit after hit and they were among the first to bring dance music to the mainstream with their progressive yet accessible sound.

Joining them are Saturday headliners, electro swing kings the Parov Stelar Band.Beat-Herder was the very first UK festival to debut the beloved Austrian pioneer of the electro swing movement, Parov Stelar, back in 2012 and the crowds have been crying out for his infectious and incendiary show with full live band ever since.

Also confirmed are true Motown legends Martha and the Vandellas, who are playing a rare UK date following a worldwide tour last year in honour of the 50th anniversary of their signature track Dancing in the Street. The traditionally dance-focussed Toil Treesstage will play host to the likes of legendary DJs like Andrew Weatherall and PaulWoolford, Krysko and Dirtybird stalwarts Catz 'n Dogz and emerging star Shiba San. Old friends and original headliners of the very first Beat-Herder Festival, dub legends Dreadzone are also confirmed to return a decade later for the tenth anniversary.

Wychwood, Beer, Cheer and Bubbles.

This is the 9th Wychwood festival to take place, which is a tragedy for me as it means I have missed 8 years of this fun filled, family friendly, yet modest event, that gently launches you into the summer festival period.  Set in the grounds of Cheltenham race course and overlooked by the Cotswold Hills, this venue is used to horseplay of a four-legged nature, but with neigh a nag in sight, Prestbury Park comes alive with a wide spectrum of characters.

The first days sound track set the pace for what would shape up to be quite the eclectic mix.  Early evening The Beat proved how they secured their rightful place high up the Ska tree. With Rankin Roger & Son getting the crowd stomping to the ever popular Ska beats. Toploader followed with their breezy, sing a long songs, that keep the crowd on a high.  Friday night headliners Soul II Soul with their blend of R&B, Soul and Electronica, surprised many who thought them a one song band (Back to life). With each song played you couldn’t help regret not paying more attention 25 years ago. But better late than never!! They exit the stage, leaving the crowd craving for more.

Saturday sees the music shift to a broader range. Unfortunately the delectable Kate Nash pulls out poorly. The Wedding Present are a crowd pleaser as they work through some of their phenomenal body of work. A French twist next from festival favourites The Caravan Palace, who’s zany Gypsy Jazz, Electro swing, is a sight and sound to behold, a big band wall of music fronted by the mesmerising stage presence that is Zoé Colotis a must see. The night’s headliners are 80’s Electro New Wave sensation The Human League and with a catalogue of hits, the crowd were on their feet from the opening “Mirror Man” to the ever popular “Don’t You Want Me” ending another great night with “Together in Electric Dreams”. The set and backdrop pay homage to the futuristic approach of the 80’s, that seem just as futuristic and relevant today, Little wonder so many artists since, have voiced this Flamboyant and eccentric group as an influence.

Sunday becomes a field of laughter with the humorous yet skilful take on classical and popular songs by the Ukele Orchestra of Great Britain.  Smiles a plenty but with admiration from this musically talented troop.  The laughter continues as Bill Bailey and his side splitting comedy take over.  Nobody being prepared for the music, jokes and insanity of this middle-aged madman. This massive force could have easily have been the finale for the main stage, but the organisers decided to bring the evening to a close by treating an appreciative crowd to the Dub Powerhouse that is Dreadzone.  This reggae tinged set was the perfect end to a fabulous weekend, having the crowd bounce and groove out the evening.

A couple of standout performances on the smaller but no lesser stages included Becky Rose, with her one gal, synth based beats and Craig Charles funk and soul show, where the crowd were whipped up in to a frenzy to match that of the energetic, multi-talented showman.

When the main attractions have finished and the majority of the crowd have turned in for the night, one stage is determined to party on regardless. As I approach the big top tent with strobes escaping from the entrance I can’t help but think that there is something missing?   Upon entry I am handed a pair of wireless headphones and as I walk on through to a sea of crazy revellers it is apparent that I have entered a nut house.  This is the silent disco, a room full of clubbers and two DJ’s but no music through the loud speakers.  I put the headphones on and find myself instantly condemned to the madhouse as I flick between the two DJ’s and adjust my dancing style accordingly.

Music for all genres means that young or old you will at some point find your dancing shoes and at the very least discover new and exciting sounds.  There are over 100 workshops to choose from, complimented with cuisine from the four corners of the world.

A lasting memory of the festival will be that of a  man releasing  another wave of bubbles they glisten like the northern lights as they pass over the light filled stage.  Wychwood really captures the essence of what a festival is about with a great energy and atmosphere.
