Ultra Music Festival adds colossal lineup additions

"In celebration of Ultra Music Festival's double weekend and 15 year anniversary, what we've achieved with this edition's ocean of talent and stage production  is, we feel, unprecedented. Avicii, Carl Cox & Armin van Buuren to headline Ultra Europe

The past couple of years have seen Tim Bergling – aka AVICII – on a rise to stardom that has been nothing short of meteoric; the pinnacle of this surely being headlining Ultra Music Festival in Miami earlier this year and being introduced onto the stage by the undisputed ‘Queen Of Pop’ Madonna. AVICII will be topping the bill for Friday 12th July and bringing his energy-filled electro house to Split.

Avicii

On Saturday 13th July it will be Dutchman Armin Van Buuren headlining the main stage at Ultra Europe. Armin’s had an amazing year flying the flag for trance music around the globe with a residency at Privilege Ibiza, closing out Ultra Music Festival Miami and recently reclaiming the coveted #1 spot on the DJ Mag Top 100 Poll. A firm favorite with audiences everywhere, he’s guaranteed to light up Croatia with his own inimitable style.

Dance icon and mainstay for almost 3 decades, Carl Cox, will also be bringing his encyclopedic knowledge of house and techno to a specially erected stage adjacent to the Poljud stadium, alongside a stellar lineup of some of the best DJs on the planet. For both days of the festival in Split you can be sure to expect some of the freshest and most cutting-edge music to be found anywhere in the world.

After early bird tickets sold out in less than ten minutes last week, tickets for GENERAL ADMISSION for the 12th and 13th July at the Poljud stadium in Split are NOW ON SALE for the still unbelievably low price of €50 for the 2 days; VIP TICKETS are priced at €100 per day; head over to www.ultraeurope.com to purchase them now. His next project, the soul-influenced ‘The Defamation of Strickland Banks’, takes the listener on a journey of a man who finds success hard to handle and then hits rock bottom. Released in 2010, the album went on to become the fifth biggest seller of the year and continued a chart presence through 2011. Featuring crafted hit singles like ‘Stay Too Long’, ‘Prayin’ and ‘The Recluse’, awards have abounded for artist and album alike including Brit Award for Best British Male and a trio of Ivor Novellos: Ben Drew Songwriter of the Year; The Defamation Of Strickland Banks Album of The Year and ‘She Said’ – Most Performed Work.  See Plan B take the main stage by storm on Saturday 14th July.

This years electronic antics steps up another notch announcing one of the biggest djs on the planet right now Avicii in the famous Dance Arena on Thursday 12th July.  The lad needs little introduction as Avicii is THE rising star of the electronic music scene making the top 10 in the 2011 DJ Top 100 poll at only 21 years of age and scoring millions of fans with his 'Levels' track which reached the top 10 in 14 European countries.  Hailing from Sweden and having first emerged onto the scene in 2008 with a remix of the theme song to the Commodore 64 video game Lazy Jones, Avicii's first release was signed to Strike Recordings, entitled 'Lazy Lace.' If you don’t already know about him then you will, Avicii is definitely one to watch and his recent collaboration with David Guetta on a track called 'Sunshine' was nominated for a Grammy award under the category for Best Dance Recording. Avicii is already taking on the dance music world by storm – Guetta better watch his back!

Making a welcome return to the EXIT Dance Arena is the cheekiest cat in dance,Felix Da Housecat, a name as synonymous with house music as it is with being the moniker of one of the greatest innovators of the current Electro sound.  Regarded as a member of the second wave of Chicago House, Felix da Housecat's breakthrough 2001 album, “Kittenz and Thee Glitz”, took the dance music world by storm as his collaborations with the now infamous Miss Kittin on "Silver Screen" and "Madame Hollywood" and "What Does it Feel Like" spawned a synth club revival.  Felix Da Housecat has music in his veins and the world has recognized this with two Grammy Award nominations for the legendary DJ/Producer. Felix is one of electronic music pioneers and we can’t wait for him to dominate the dancefloor at EXIT.

Performing live on the same night is the unusually named Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (TEED) moniker Orlando Higginbottom, swinging between an overt musicality and scarily on-point dancefloor sensibility, ripping up clubs around the globe with his live show of bizarre instruments, glitter cannons and of course… dancing dinosaurs. His first two EPs (released in 2009 and 2010) have already stirred up the commotion around TEED, set to culminate this May with the release of the debut album, so brace yourselves for exclusives in the Dance Arena. Orlando’s greatest and latest adventure is the famous trip to Congo, where he worked closely with local musicians, as a producer, personally invited by Damon Albarn and Oxfam on their DRC LP project.

deadmau5

Other highlights come from the Grammy nominated and globally acclaimed Paul van Dyk who jets in from his Cream Ibiza residency just for the occasion, along with one of the most discerning trance outfits in the business Above & Beyond and the mighty Ferry Corsten.  We see the return of everyone’s favourite flying Scotsman Calvin Harris who joins deadmau5 on the North stage plus a live performance from singer / rapper / musician / producer extraordinaire Example.Example

This of course is just the tip of the iceberg as we also introduce four new arenas for 2012.  Internationally renowned techno god Richie Hawtin presents his brand new concept in the form of the M-nus presents Enter. Arena, curated by the man himself he brings together some of the most exciting artists from the scene including Loco Dice, Seth Troxler, Gaiser and Paco Osuna.  Everyone’s favourite superstylers Groove Armada return to DJ as hosts of their very own arena, expect carnivalesque, ass shaking mayhem from the funk battalion who will be joined by BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix star A-Trak plus the highly anticipated return from DJ/Producer Stuart Price aka Jacques Lu Cont, not to mention performances from the likes of Fake Blood, Jaguar Skills, Alex Metric and Burns.   BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Mistajam has curated his own Speakerbox arena featuring performances from the likes of Sub Focus Live, Knife Party, Borgore, Shy FX feat Stamina MC and Redlight.   Creamfields favourite and international superstar DJ Mr Eddie Halliwell returns as host as he debuts the all new Fire It Up Arena – there are people who play records and there are DJ’s who blow minds – Eddie is the latter, expect a wagon load of production and SFX too, as this arena will be full throttle from start to finish as he’s joined by the likes of Sander van Doorn, Mark Knight, Funkagenda and Michael Woods to name a few.

Laidback LukeFollowing last year’s superhero success Laidback Luke returns with his Super You&Me arena once again, and to celebrate we welcome a debut performance from American DJ/Producer and Dim Mak Records boss Steve Aoki (expect the odd stage dive!), Wolfgang Gartner, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano – what superhero outfit will you be wearing?

Stereosonic 2011 Brisbane Review

Stereosonic

With the likes of Armin Van Buuren, Carl Cox, Afrojack, The Bloody Beetroots, LMFAO and more, I knew I was in for a MASSIVE day. Stereosonic has a brilliant phone app (for iphones and android) that you can you use with event info, lineups, set times, maps and most importantly a planner. As there are multiple stages, this ensured that I saw everyone I wanted to.

We started off checking out what was on offer and easing into the day. We swanned between stages checking out the likes of Andy C and Bagraiders and the atmosphere was buzzing! I’ve got to say a definite highlight of my day was when the masked duo Bloody Beetroots played Warp. If you haven’t heard of this italian duo, they are definitely worth checking out.

Stereosonic is not just a day full of massive DJ’s and live acts, it is also a day where fashion takes on a whole new meaning. The costumes and getups were amazing but with most, it was a case of less is more. With most of the beautiful ladies opting to say no to material. Even though the event has a shirts on policy for the boys, by 5pm that policy went out the window. I have never been to an event with such little clothing on happy punters.

Now it was time to head to the mainstage. The sun was starting to set and as LMFAO hit the stage, the entire festival just went off! They started off with ‘Sorry For Party Rocking’ and of cause they were in their classic animal print and highlighter getups. They had the same backup dancers from their videos and they were amazing doing all the crazy moves that defy gravity. Sky Blu unfortunately wasn’t able to make the gig cause of a back injury but Redfoo was definitely capable of holding the gig by himself. The entire festival shuffled to I’m in Miami Bitch and Champagne Showers leaving their massive hits till last. I have never seen so many people shuffle, wiggle and and thrust their hips at one time when they encored with ‘Sexy and I Know It’.

When Armin van buuren hit the stage, it was pure brilliance. Even though tired after a day of dancing, you couldn’t help but stomp your feet with the massive tunes, pyro and fireworks, it was an awesome way to finish off the festival.

All in all, Stereosonic is always a super fun, super crowded day of dancing and good tunes. While it’s not an event for the faint of heart, it definitely came through with the goods this year.
