Cream @ Amnesia Ibiza 2016

Its Thursday night and the Summer Festival Guide crew is in the sunny White Isle otherwise more commonly known as Ibiza!

We immediately notice this morning that our hotel is much more busier than it was earlier this week which makes me think that Ibiza is going to be busy tonight. With so many amazing clubs here, there is one club and event that we would definitely not miss. Tonight internationally renowned Amnesia hosts global super clubbing brand Cream, this happens every Thursday during the summer months and brings together some of the biggest artists on the planet.

This year you will find the likes of Paul Van Dyk, Markus Schultz, Above & Beyond, Armin Van Buuren, Fatboy Slim, Steve Aoki, Knife Party, Laidback Luke, Pete Tong and many more gracing the decks at this award winning club which has been around since 1976!

This evening's lineup reads like something out of a music festival with Armin Van Buuren, Fatboy Slim, Aly & Fila, John O'Callaghan, Amine Edge & Dance and more providing the beats that the crowd are here to dance to.

Driving to Amnesia just as the doors are about to open (around midnight) we get a tingling sensation knowing that we are about to experience something we never have before. The bright lighting from the sign and floodlights immediately signal we are in on the right course and jumping out of the car and into the queue there is already music blaring out of the doors. You can just feel the energy from everyone around you as you start to walk into the main room with Ruben De Ronde already getting the crowd well warmed up with some banging trance.

We walk across to the Terrace, Anton Powers has a crowd grooving to some house beats. The VIP section is located on the floor above both dance floors with immense views of the crowd on the main and terrace dance floors. With our bearings all sorted we get settled into the main room with Australian artist Marlo given the job of setting up for trance master and A State of Trance (ASOT) head honcho Armin Van Buuren. Marlo's set is incredibly energetic and by the time 2.30am rolls around the main room is packed to the rim! Armin wastes no time getting into the groove as he kicks into top gear bringing his notorious trance sound to the hot and sweaty crowd. With CO2 cannons, incredible visuals and lasers in the mix, Anmesia really does live up to its name and reputation as one of the worlds best clubs.

Having already danced my feet off for over 2 hours in the main room, I head to the Terrace to catch the infamous Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim. As with the main room, the terrace is also packed right to the back bar but there is still plenty of room to have an enjoyable dance. As the lights go down, the vocals of Praise You kick in with a huge applause and cheers from the crowd. The room glows yellow and Fatboy Slim pops up behind the decks. Immediately we are hit with the synths of Eat Sleep Rave Repeat and you can feel that Fatboy Slim is teasing the crowd, as soon as the bass kicks in, the CO2 cannons erupt and bodies are jumping all around the dance floor. I get a feeling this is going to be quite the workout if this is anything to go by.

Fatboy Slim's two hour set is fun and enjoyable, one of the best I have heard for a long time, full of tunes from his enormous back catalog including Renegade Master, Star 69, Praise You, Rockafella Skank and more.

As I head out the doors in the early hours with a huge smile on my face, I am massively happy that I came to Amnesia to witness the Cream experience. For anyone heading to the sunny shores of Ibiza, Amnesia and especially Cream is a night you should book into your schedule. Warning, bring your best dancing shoes because its guaranteed you will not move off that dance floor from the moment you enter those doors!

Cream comes to Amnesia every Thursday until the 15th September 2016.

Stereosonic Sydney: LIVE review

Wow Stereosonic, is all I can really say. The annual electronic-dance festival is held across Australia, cropping up in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne and is currently Australia’s biggest and fasting growing music festival. This year on Saturday 28th November I was off to check out the famous dance festival I had heard so much about. A lot of it had been positive, but many people I met had warned me of the typical ‘Stereosonic crowd’, stating that the festival was notoriously rowdy, full of groups of muscled guys searching for a fight and over-made-up bikini-clad girls seeking attention.

However with a line-up boasting the likes of trance king Armin Van Burren, Swedish dance duo Axwell ^ Ingrosso and electronic music squad Major Lazer, there was no way a few Chinese whispers would sway me from dancing the night away to some of the world’s most impressive dance acts.

And as we flitted through the entry gates, donning clichéd neon paint and flower headbands, I wasn’t worried at all. Sure, there was a lot of bare skin on show, but isn’t there always at a festival? And besides, it is the start of one of Australia’s (hopefully?) super-scorching summers.

After grabbing an (extremely over-priced) can of cider, we made a beeline for the main stage to catch Swedish electronic music duo Galantis set. It was early on in the day and already the mood was electric, with the crowd dancing along to the beat rampantly. Their catchy 2014 hit single ‘Runaway (U & I) caused the whole mob of fans to sing (or scream) along to the lyrics and we all danced along ridiculously to the tune. The atmospheric was euphoric, and I couldn’t help but feel really, really happy. So far so good!

Dutch brothers Showtek took to the main stage next and they sure managed to carry the crowd along with their thumping rhythms and blinding neon visuals. Their impressive hit single ‘Bad’, produced with EDM legend David Guetta, really hit the crowd running, prompting insane amounts of rapid arm waving and extremely vigorous jumping. The music paired with the enthusiasm of the crowd, the colourful showering confetti and the rather humorous inflatables being chucked around (there was a ‘naked woman’ floating through the crowd at one point) made the scene feel absolutely surreal (no, really). Another fantastic set.

It was soon time for Australian electronic duo Peking Duk, and I was eager to have a listen. They were a pair I had only really heard about since arriving in Australia but their name had risen up a fair few times in conversation. I was quickly impressed – the music was exhilarating, feeling like the beat was running tingling through your body. Their single ‘High’ proved to be very popular, with the crowds clapping and singing along to the catchy vocals and bopping along in time. My favourite part of the set involved an incredibly interesting remix of The Lion King’s ‘Circle of life’. I honestly hadn’t heard anything like it before!

Next up was a big one – the notoriously wild EDM group Major Lazer. Having seen them live before, I mentally prepared myself for a crazy performance that may involve me being hurled through the crowd. We certainly weren’t disappointed and were treated to a concoction of exciting interactions including the likes of lead member Diplo crowd surfing across the masses in a zorb ball (!!), scantily-clad dancers dancing vigorously in time to the music and strict instructions for the men of the crowd to whip off their shirts and chuck them high, high into in the air. Ending their set with everyone’s favourite chart-topper ‘Lean on’, I felt satisfied that once again Major Lazer had proven they are one of the most fun and exciting dance acts out there – their continuous interaction with the crowd really is something else.

Utterly hooked into the main stage (who can blame us really with that line up), it was Axwell Λ Ingrosso (Swedish House Mafia reformed without Steve Angelo) up next. In all honestly, I was absolutely captivated from the start and their set proved to be my favourite of the whole festival. ‘Barricade’ engrossed the crowd with a long and tantalizing lead up, along with crowd favourites such as ‘On my way’ and ‘Something’. The atmosphere made me feel completely and utterly encompassed in the music and their feel-good hit single ‘Sun is shining’, teamed with fantastic visuals and sky-high flames was a highlight of the set.

Finally, it was time for trance royalty Armin Van Buuren to take to the stage. As usual he was absolutely phenomenal, treating his dedicated supporters to crowd favourites such as the catchy ‘Another you’ along with hidden gems such as the Dan Stone rework of ‘See the sun’. With eye-blindingly amazing visuals, countless bursts of confetti and insane lighting it was an absolutely amazing show to be part of, and crowds and crowds of fans had gathered to dance away to the dance legend. A suprise appearance from singer/songwriter/producter Mr Probz was also hugely welcomed and he joined Armin to treat the crowd to his massive 2013 hit 'Waves'.

Towards the end of the set we were shaken up with the psychedelic and fast-thudding ‘Vini vici’ by The Tribe, before an emotional W&W remix of ‘This is what it feels like’, arguably Armin’s most commercial and most popular hit. I found the slow and dramatic version of the hit rather mushy and melodramatic but didn’t mind too much at all. The whole crowd was singing along zealously, hands clapping and arms waving and it really did feel like the end of something truly amazing. The song concluded with fantastic flashing lights, thumping drops and a spectacle of colourful fireworks. A fantastic end to an incredibly memorable day and night.

Stereosonic – I am utterly impressed and you exceeded my expectations fully. There will always be some rough crowds at music festivals but personally I didn’t even experience that at all and to me, it seemed all about the music.

Creamfields 2015 Review

This August Bank Holiday Weekend 2015 I returned to Creamfields for the first time in over a decade to see the “cream” of international DJs perform to tens of thousands of revellers a day.

I arrived fashionably late on the Friday evening and was pleased to see the hospitality campsite still had plenty of space for me to pitch my tent.

I soon made my way out into the festival arena.  Not every arena was open on the Friday but the ones that were were very busy.

Rebel Sound (also known as David Rodigan, Chase & Status, Shy FX and MC Rage) headlined one of the numerous big top arenas that night.  The predominantly young and very lively crowd lapped up the old skool jungle vibes.

Over in the Mega Arena trance God Armin Van Buuren headlined with his first set of the weekend (he was playing on Saturday too).  He played a mix of new and old tracks, closing the night with his new tune featuring Mr Probz, Another You.

Saturday for me was all about the Chemical Brothers, in my opinion the greatest live dance act on the circuit.  They headlined the North Stage with a sound and vision extravaganza featuring amongst other things a giant robot and big bouncy balls.

Earlier in the day I’d spent some time in the Smirnoff House for Ben Pearce’s disco set which included Todd Terje’s Inspector Norse.  Mistajam played a garage classics set and the young ravers enjoyed being up close and personal with the Radio 1Xtra star.  A party set from him followed which started with Ghostbusters (yes really!).

The highlight of Sunday for me came very early when I, a few hundred others and Fatboy Slim met up at the South Stage at 9am.  We were all given black caps and rain ponchos and were instructed to lie on the pre-drawn white lines on the grass in the shape of a smiley face in an attempt to break a UK record.  Now this might sound like an easy task but when you take into account that most of the group were a little worse for wear and hadn’t been to sleep all night you might get an idea of what really went down.

Fatboy Slim was extremely friendly and hung around for photos, hugs and kisses with anyone who wanted them after the helicopter had passed overhead to take photos.  It was a lot of fun and well worth getting up early for.

Sunday ended up as clash central for me with legendary DJs in almost every tent including Paul Oakenfold, Sasha and Paul Van Dyk.  Along with the slightly older DJs came the slightly older crowd.

The Pepsi Max Arena on the Sunday became the trance tent where Ferry Corsten pleased the arms aloft crowd with gems such as Rank 1’s Airwave.

It was a tough choice deciding which DJ to end the festival with with big names such as Axwell and Ingrosso, Hardwell, Fatboy Slim and Tiesto all playing at the same time.

Fatboy Slim played a crowd pleasing set which was slightly more commercial than the set I’d seen him play at Bugged Out Weekender earlier this year.  This suited the Creamfields crowd well as they stomped along to favourites such as Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat.

Over on the South Stage Tiesto headlined with big tunes including the infamous Adagio for Strings.

When 11pm came around it was time for the fireworks and the last tunes to ring out.  The young ravers were sad it was all coming to an end but were already making plans for next year.

Armin van Buuren to debut Gaia show at South West Four 2015

Returning to the Capital for the first time since headlining our 10th Anniversary back in 2013, we can reveal that Armin van Buuren will present the UK debut of his ‘Gaia’ alias at SW4 2015. Firmly based around his uplifting and euphoric sound, Gaia has been a production name for Armin since the late nineties, however only now is he ready to bring this to a live audience. Having specifically chosen SW4 to showcase this new concept in a full UK festival exclusive, this appearance will look to build on the inaugural performance of Gaia which destroyed Miami’s Ultra Music Festival last year. With a new Armin album in the pipeline for release later this year, this reincarnation of one the world’s greatest DJs is set to shake London to its very core. You’d better be prepared for this…

ARMIN VAN BUUREN SPEAKS TO SW4…

Ahead of the UK debut of Gaia, Armin van Buuren spoke exclusively with the South West Four website to give some insight into this hugely anticipated performance. Armin explains how the Gaia concept came about and why SW4 is the “logical choice” for its inaugural performance of the project on our shores. We look back at Armin’s previous performances at South West Four and why this will be his most memorable set at the festival to date.

AVICII will make his long-awaited return to the newly designed Ultra Main Stage having missed his 2014 performance due to illness. Famed for saving his most electrifying performances for the Ultra crowd (playing alongside Madonna in 2012 and debuting brand new material from his chart topping album ‘True’ in 2013), if past years are anything to go by fans are in for another incredible spectacle from the Swedish star. Fellow countrymen AXWELL^INGROSSO will be making their eagerly anticipated debut as a duo at Ultra Music Festival Miami, following a mesmerizing set at Ultra Japan in September 2014 and scheduled headlining sets at both Ultra South Africa and Buenos Aires in February 2015. With their first album as a pair set for release next year, a whole host of incredible new material is guaranteed to air. To add to the Main Stage fun, the likes of AFROJACK, ALESSO, ARMIN VAN BUUREN, DAVID GUETTA, ERIC PRYDZ, HARDWELL, KNIFE PARTY, MARTIN GARRIX, NICKY ROMERO, SKRILLEX, STEVE AOKI, STEVE ANGELLO and TIËSTO will all return to transform Bayfront Park into the world’s greatest electronic music gathering.

As a festival that prides itself on providing its fans with a huge range of varying sounds and experiences, Ultra Music Festival has also confirmed some of the most respected techno and deep house performers to join the more recognized names as headliners, with acts such as ADAM BEYER, CARL COX, DEEPDISH, DIXON, JAMIE JONES, LOCO DICE, MACEO PLEX, MARCO CAROLA and TALE OF US all preparing to bring their A-game to a range of the world’s most technically advanced stages.

Forever pushing the boundaries with its revolutionary live programming, Ultra’s now-legendary LIVE STAGE brings us something from every corner of the electronic music spectrum. Grammy-nominated RÖYKSOPP will play Ultra for the first time since 2011 to showcase their recently released (and what they claim to be their final) studio album, while South African rap duo DIE ANTWOORD, electronic group CLEAN BANDIT and Canadian vocalist KIESZA will all bring a different energy to the festivities, as they take to Ultra’s flagship festival for the very first time. Perhaps two of the most eagerly awaited shows across the weekend will come from Tropical House pioneer KYGO and virtuoso producer PORTER ROBINSON, who will each bring their own array of eclectic sounds to the befitting and iconic Klipsch Amphitheatre. With BASSNECTAR, KREWELLA and NETSKY assured to lay down a boatload of bass, Phase One also sees the likes of GORGON CITY, ODESZA and RAC confirmed to showcase their distinctive live shows.

Ultra ambassador and crowd favorite CARL COX returns to the ULTRA MEGASTRUCTURE for a groundbreaking eleventh year, in which the techno king will host his legendary CARL COX & FRIENDS across Friday, March 27 and Saturday, March 28. Trance icon ARMIN VAN BUUREN will then take the reins of the fabled Megastructure on Sunday, March 29, to ensure the festival ends with a bang as he brings his ‘TOGETHER IN A STATE OF TRANCE’ show to the masses. Ever up-to-date with the latest trends in underground music, Ultra will also introduce a new setting this year in the form of the RESISTANCE stage, which will boast some of the very best techno and house from the world’s most exciting underground talent. Further information on all stages will be revealed in the coming weeks.
