Larmer Tree announce headliners for 2016

Larmer Tree Festival returns this summer, presenting the adventurous, the absorbing and the unforgettable, with an all-new programme of music, comedy, theatre, poetry and more across five days (13th-17th July 2016).

Set in Victorian gardens in the stunning landscape of the Cranborne Chase, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty spread across Dorset and Wiltshire, Larmer Tree is the quintessential party; an intimate and eccentric festival perfect for first-timers and experienced festival-goers alike.

Each of the stages are carefully curated by the Larmer Tree team, combining established favourites with newcomers destined for success. The final line-up will appeal to festival-goers of all generations.

Music headliners

Tom Odell replaces the previously announced Clean Bandit.

Tom Odell is returning to Larmer Tree Festival after a stunning debut performance in 2014. With hit tracks from his platinum album ‘Long Way Down’ and plenty of new material to share with the Larmer Tree audience, the Brit Awards winner will bring the festival to a close with true style.

With a Grammy, two Golden Globes, two GQ Man of the Years, three Brits, three Sony Radios and numerous other nominations and awards under his belt, we are over the moon to welcome Jamie Cullum to Larmer Tree 2016. The festival will once again present its attendees with a customarily diverse offering where electronic meets traditional, jazz meets folk.

Having wowed across the world Caro Emerald, with her infectious mix of jazz, pop and electro-swing, is coming to charm the Main Stage. The record-breaking Dutch singer is known for her style, and we expect her performance to be as timeless as she is.

Crossing global barriers as well as musical, Calexico’s international mix of artists is the reason for their eclectic releases. With a sound which adapts and evolves as the band visit new places, we’re excited to see the result of Larmer Tree’s infectious vibrancy!

Some significant new additions have been added to the line-up, promising a huge variety of sounds in the intimate and unique landscape of the festival’s Gardens setting. DJ and Producer Quantic combines the use of multiple instruments with elements of salsa, soul, funk, jazz and bossa nova, all performed by Worcestershire-born Will Holland. Top international reggae collective Easy Star All-Stars have also confirmed an exciting set at Larmer Tree. Renowned for their unique, dub-inspired interpretations of classic albums (including ‘Dub Side of the Moon’ and ‘Easy Star’s Thrillah’) this is a band not to be missed.

Mercury Prize album of the year nominee, Zimbabwean born singer-songwriter Eska also joins the bill, along with Columbian band Sidestepper, Sheffield duo Slow Club and the much anticipated Hot 8 Brass Band. Plus Stevie Parker, based in Bath and performing under the ambient electro pop genre, who has enraptured audiences across the South West with her powerful voice.

Johnny Lynch as The Pictish Trail and East-End folk group Stick in the Wheel, who are famed for using the sounds and culture of London life, from birdsong to sirens, in their music.

Also added, Larmer Tree are pleased to confirm returning festival favourite Steve Knightley, Louisiana guitarist Gill Landry and up-and-coming band The Little Unsaid, who will be performing tracks from
their hugely successful crowdfunded album ‘Fisher King’.

Poetry, Literature & Talks Headliner

Larmer Tree’s poetry and spoken word headliner is Dr John Cooper Clarke, who will be taking to the ARC stage. An original, performance ‘punk poet’, Clarke has toured with punk and reggae legends including the Sex Pistols, Elvis Costello and Joy Division, with his characteristic set of lively, rapid-fire, a cappella poetry.

Family Festivaling

Larmer Tree has an exciting special guest for the littlest festival-goers of 2016. Pop along and say ‘Ello!’ to Mr Bloom from CBeebies. There’ll be a bundle of veggie stories, gardening games and catchy Nursery songs for Tiddlers and Parents alike.

Even More Music

Gabrielle Aplin, with her melodious vocals and girl-next-door charm will be returning to grace the Main Stage as will Lau, the free-thinking visionaries regarded as the epicentre of the new folk boom. Between them, these two acts boast shelves groaning with awards, countless ecstatic reviews and breathless plaudits from excited audiences world-wide.

Four years ago, Jack Savoretti had had enough of scratching a living as an independent artist, of business bust-ups, of being touted as a soon-to-be star. Now, he shines as one of the brightest stars in 2016, recently completing a sold-out headline UK and Ireland tour which finished at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire and was rated four stars by The Independent. Afro Celt Sound System return to Larmer Tree this year to captivate the crowd, fusing electronic dance music with traditional Irish and West African music.

Launching in 2016 is The Chase, a stage championing the best in new music, showcasing artists such as Rozi Plain who will be singing individually as well as alongside the hushed horns and electronic textures of This is the Kit. Artists performing in The Chase are part of an eclectic programme of skronk jazz, space folk and twisted pop; from the acoustic sounds of The Wave Pictures to Cristobal and the Sea’s Southern Mediterranean tropicalia pop, with further acts including Melt Yourself Down and Hillbenders, the Missouri band who tribute The Who in rock opera Tommy.

The Chase stage has been hand-curated by the festival’s newest team members Todd Wills and Matt Aitken, music programmers behind Bristol’s home of music, Colston Hall. With an emphasis on discovering both emerging talent and musicians who deserve to be on your radar, The Chase promises to be a firm festival favourite.

Away from The Chase, Treacherous Orchestra’s musical gaelic ferocity and the lively foot-stomping blues from Dana Immanuel & The Stolen Band cater to the high-energy. Yet as always, songwriters and folk will also take a leading role in proceedings and Martin Simpson & Dom Flemons, Ethan Johns & Black Eyed Dogs, Sound of the Sirens and Fenne Lily are all expected to shower you with smooth rhythms, acoustic guitar and hair-raising vocals.

Larmer Tree always attracts performers from across the world like Rev Peyton’s Big Damn Band who come bearing Country Blues from Indiana, but this year the representation of eclectic British acts is astounding. From the hillbilly swing of Urban Pioneers and the dark jazz texture of The Chris Woods Groove Orchestra to Lady Maisery’s revival of the dying art of tune singing and the lively Caribbean roots music of Edward II, this year’s festival truly has it all.

Sir Tom Jones leads this years Larmer Tree Festival lineup

We're delighted to announce returning stars this year, with Sir Tom Jones once again topping the bill and opening the festival on Wednesday 15th July. He will be followed on Thursday by another returning Larmer Tree band, Levellers, dynamic guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela on Friday, Femi Kution Saturday and Jimmy Cliff on Sunday.

Truly something for everyone, this festival is hosted at the idyllic Larmer Tree Gardens on the Wiltshire/Dorset border, replete with roaming peacocks and Victorian pagodas, and showcases music acts that span all genres including rock, folk, World, swing, soul and pop. Hilarious comedy acts are featured, as are live DJs, unique shopping areas, performance art, therapy gardens, comfy camping, art installations, fancy dress, activities for children, award-winning festival food and local brewery suppliers. It being the 25th anniversary, there are a number of surprises planned to make this the best edition yet.

Sir Tom Jones to headline Larmer Tree Festival

Opening up this years Larmer Tree Festival will be BBC One's The Voice, Sir Tom Jones!

“I’ve heard great things about Larmer Tree Festival so it will be my pleasure to come and perform there. It looks like a wonderful setting for a great night of good music.” – Tom Jones

Born Thomas Jones Woodward in Pontypridd, South Wales, after quitting school at 15 and working in a variety of manual jobs, singing in clubs at night and marrying at 17, Jones went on to sign with Decca Records.

Although he is famous for hits including It’s Not UnusualDelilah and What’s New Pussycat, he is first and foremost an artist with a true rhythm and blues soul.  His 46-year career has gone from strength to strength, recently garnering the best reviews of his career for his two latest albums Spirit In The Room and Praise & Blame.

Knighted in 2006, Tom also performed at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace in 2012. Other highlights of his long career include receiving BRIT Awards for Best Male in 2000 and Outstanding Contribution to Music in 2003, and more recently in 2010, the prestigious Music Industry Trust Award.

In 2012 Tom joined the BBC’s primetime television show, The Voice, and this year is working alongside Will.i.am, Kylie Minogue and Ricky Wilson, coaching talented hopefuls in their search to become pop stars.  We’ll certainly be watching this series keenly and cheering for a Team Tom winner for 2014!

Larmer Tree announce stellar Comedy lineup

Once again, Larmer Tree has unveiled some of the best and brightest comedy acts confirmed to perform in the ARC Comedy Club at this year's festival. Laughing yourself silly at the comedy on offer has always been an integral, not to mention hugely popular, part of the Larmer Tree experience – and that is certain to continue with this year’s line-up!

2013 will continue with a great line up over four nights. Julia Safe, Larmer Tree's Co-Director and comedy programmer said: "We are very excited to have such a fantastic line-up this year and have a unique mix of well-known names and impressive emerging talent."

Heading up the comedy line-up and headlining at The ARC Comedy Club on Thursday is the wonderful Dylan Moran. Perrier winner Moran is a talented comedic actor and writer, finding fame for his BAFTA winning Channel 4 sitcom Black Books, and a film career including the hit UK comedies Shaun of the Dead and Run, Fat Boy Run. One of the best stand-ups of his generation, he has been referred to as 'The Oscar Wilde of Comedy' – a reference to the unkempt wordsmith's interesting take on everything from “vegetarians, middle-aged decline, Van Morrison and Tesco."

Saturday night will see the Nation’s favourite impressionist Alistair McGowan return to his stand-up roots. Best known for The Big Impression on BBC 1, he started his stand-up career at London's Comedy Store in the early nineties and went on to provide voices for Spitting Image. McGowan’s public profile has increased in many ways since then with appearances in Bleak House and Skins, stints as an author, playwright and journalist and appearances on TV shows such as Have I Got News for You,  Live At The Apollo and A Question of Sport.

The comedy talent is international this year with the third headliner Rich Hall, master of absurd irony, bringing his Hoedown show to Larmer Tree for the first time on Sunday night. A regular on shows such as QI and Have I Got News For You?, Hall’s Hoedown is a mixture of music, comedy, liquor and ‘spent dreams’ – Larmer Tree cannot wait to see him in action!

Topping off the headliners, performing on Friday night, are the fast paced sketch comedians Idiots of Ants.  The four-piece formed in 2007 and one the highlights of their career was performing at the prestigious Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal alongside legends such as Bill Cosby, Jimmy Carr, Ross Noble and John Cleese (who even appeared in one of their sketches!)  They are favourites on YouTube where their Facebook in Real Life and Wii Breakfast sketches are two of the most viewed comedy clips of all time.

Other performers to make sure you mark in the programme include Chortle 2013 Best Club Comic and Best Show Award winner Tony Law who brings his sense of the absurd to Larmer Tree on Friday, following his sell-out UK tour. Saturday night will see Doc Brown on stage. Rapper, actor, musician and authority on the hip hop scene, Doc Brown is a name to watch. He is hugely talented – he recently supported Ricky Gervais around the world, appeared on The InbetweenersRev and Miranda and has worked with Mark Ronson, Lily Allen and the Kaiser Chiefs. His inspired show is a "seamless mix of truly inspired hip hop and stand up."

Rounding off the exiting comedy line-up for 2013 are: Ray Peacock, Patrick Monahan, The Noise Next Door, Jarlath Regan, Kieran Boyd, Mark Cooper-Jones, Paul Currie, Tommy Rowson and Matt Richardson

There is also cracking comedic entertainment for children at the Comedy Club 4 Kids – held at The Social during the day, Larmer Tree have the best comedians performing brilliant comedy without the rude bits! What more could you possibly ask for?!

As always, comedy is just one part of the varied and eclectic programme of performances at Larmer Tree. Headline performances from Van Morrison, Dexys, Seasick Steve, Imelda May and Bellowhead are confirmed, together with some enduring Larmer Tree favourites such as the carnival, workshops and events such as the ever popular Marc Kermode's Film Club, which has Time and Time Travel as the theme this yearLarmer Tree’s favourite film critic presents a selection of his much-loved films in The Playground, where he will introduce many of them, providing some fascinating insights into the films and their makers.
