Cocoon in the Park Preview – Who to look out for

For one unforgettable day and night, the back garden of the quaint, scenic and peaceful setting of Temple Newsam will be transformed into an electronic, beat-heavy haven. A place where thousands of music fanatics can listen to hour-upon-hour of highly-charged techno, with a heavy-duty line-up with no trace of a weak link. This is, of course, Cocoon in the Park; so be prepared for a day witnessing a consistent view of pumping fists to the likes of Sven Väth, Dixon, Seb Zito and the almight Carl Cox – and that’s just to name a few.

I saw Enzo Siragusa play alongside tINI just a couple of weeks ago, and to say it was incredible would be an understatement. The dancefloor was packed with a typical array of sweating bodies, all of us wonderstruck with his stripped down tech house style beats that whet our appetite so well. His appearance at Cocoon at the Park should be no different, and he’s definitely one who you should get down – whether early in the day or not – to witness.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Sven Väth is, quite frankly, a legend amongst men. His style and passion knows no boundaries; it has influenced many and has truly revolutionised electronic music, so to hear he’ll be leading an army of music fanatics at Cocoon is music to everyone’s ears. Expect deep, indulging sounds and chasm of rich interludes – and more than anything, one hell of a set.

Ricardo Villalobos minimal percussion styling might not be to everyone’s taste, but at a festival like Cocoon, even the most unsold of revellers will be given the chance to see what the half Chilean has to offer. His sets have differed, sometimes containing blends of solid down to acid house, other times something completely different; but he is simply a pioneer,  a DJ so different and exciting, it’s almost essential to catch a glimpse of him at Cocoon.

Carl Cox is a name that simply exhumes that dark, exciting, fist-pumping atmosphere when said out loud. You don’t need to be told of the talent; it’s almost become agiven, just common knowledge – this guy is an enigma. I don’t think I’ve ever spoken to someone who has seen Carl Cox for them to respond ‘that was average’; he delivers a spectacle of progressive, atmospheric beats to a crowd that come back, time and time again, to see him reign once again. To have him at the forefront of the Cocoon ship this year is a choice welcomed by many, and definitely a set that will be unmissable.

Cocoon in the Park returns to Temple Newsam on July 11th. For tickets, visit www.cocooninthepark.com.

Sven Väth set for Cocoon in the Park 2012

Set a stone's throw from Leeds city centre, the Cocoon in the Park festival site lies within the grounds of a 450-year-old mansion house surrounded by forests and lakes in a celebrated area of outstanding natural beauty. The historic estate of Temple Newsam once again plays host to an exclusive line-up over one stage led by Cocoon ringmaster Sven Väth with support from Cassy and Visionquest.

The festival site includes various food outlets and bars, a chill-out area and a VIP platform where VIP ticketholders can enjoy views across the site and main stage with access to separate toilets and a bar. The main stage is powered by a Funktion-One PA custom-built by festival sound specialists Audio-Plus and features state of the art pyrotechnics, a live VJ and of course performances from the Cocoon dance troupe. Expect nothing less than the usual breathtaking Cocoon production and top quality soundtrack to one of the most popular and talked about events in the UK.

As for the music, Väth is a ruler of the techno world and has been for decades.  With his revered label and club of the same name, Cocoon, he has brought techno to the masses all over the world and, most famously, at Amnesia, Ibiza, since the turn of the millennium.  His learned vinyl sets included sounds from a vast remit of techno; incorporate plenty of colours, oomph and dancing bait and, all the while, are served up with a loveable élan and unbridled passion.

And so to next headliner, Cassy… a regular in the best Berlin clubs, as well as places like fabric, she is an upstanding member of the deep house community who has mixed it up for Cocoon and Panorama Bar in the past.  Her sets are cultured things, much like her productions on her own labels and others like Perlon, and it’s for that reason that she is so in-demand.

Finally, Visionquest (Seth Troxler, Ryan Crosson, Shaun Reeves) will do their unadulterated electronic thing.  Little needs to be said of these current scene darlings: their own label has launched an underground pop revolution, they’ve mixed it up for fabric, taken over at WMC and are generally a crew as lovable as they are sonically inventive.

ARTISTS

Sven Väth
Väth is a ruler of the techno world and has been for decades.

Ricardo Villalobos
The most revered of all the minimalists, Chilean Ricardo Villalobos has long been a genre leader.  His avant-guard electronic sounds (for his own Sei Es Drum as well as the likes of Perlon) push the boundaries of what is possible both on an electronic full length and a simple 12”, whilst his sets cause roadblocks wherever they are in the world. No one else pulls out quite such a varied selection of records, laces them together so skilfully and has quite the ear for a groove as Ricardo.

Reboot
German producer Reboot has a long history of great productions on labels like Cadenza and Cocoon and is regarded as one of the finest DJs and live acts of the day.  His sets incorporate the whole spectrum from deep minimal sounds to driving electronic-tech vibes and oldshool House. For the last few years the man has been playing at clubs such as Cocoon Club, Panoramabar, Club 11, Fabric and many more.

Seth Troxler
He’s the techno dandy every girl wants to date and every boy wants to be.  Warm and enigmatic techno releases on Wolf + Lamb, Spectral Sound; a compilation on BPitch and a residency at Ibiza’s DC:10 last year have all propelled this Detroit born Berlin based party starter into the spotlight in recent years. His sets weave colour with emotion everywhere from Fabric to Watergate and back again.
